Pat Hentgen, 'no flash in the pan'
by Jim Hughson
Last year in Baltimore, Pat
Hentgen was recognized as a
baseball all-star but didn't get into
the game. This year in Pittsburgh
he got into the game but got no
recognition.
The ace of Toronto's pitching
staff entered the mid -summer
classic in the seventh• inning with
the American League leading 7-5.
He gave up a base hit. to Jeff
Bagwell, had Wil Cordero hit into a
double play, then retired Tony
Gw.ynn on a grounder and left after
10 pitches. But an international
television audience never saw his
name on the screen or heard it
mentioned over the airwaves. The
name on his back (pronounced the
way it's spelled - Hent -gen, not
Hencken) was all that distinguished
the young star from Claude Raines.
Two days later, in. Texas, Hentgen
managed a smile and shook his
head when asked about his phantom
appearance in one of baseball's
biggest games. He'd heard from
friends, at home in Fraser,
Michigan, that his appearance had
been overlooked and said they were
more upset about the slight than he
was. After all, he was at the game.
"It was lots of fun and a neat
experience to be around all those
great players," said the 25 -year-old
right-hander, who had his wife,
parents, sister and agent with him.
"They had a great time, too, getting
to meet a lot of celebrities they see
on TV all the time and some of the
other players."
Two all-star games and a pair of
World Series rings for a pitcher
who's only been a big -league starter
for a year and a half could inflate
an ego faster than you can say
Barry Bonds, but Hentgen remains
in awe of all-stars, even though he
is one.
"Last year I felt pretty
uncomfortable amongst all those
guys," remembers Hentgen of his

trip to Baltimore. "But this year 1
felt as though I belonged. Still, I
was pretty nervous out on the
mound and when that happens I
compare everything to the World
Series game I pitched in (a 10-3
win over the Phillies in Game 3).
That's the ultimate and if I go
through that I can get through
anything."
It appears that self-assessment is
accurate. Despite his team's dismal
first half, Pat posted an 11-5 record,
has become a stopper who wins.
when ' the team is desperate and
beats opponents even. when he
doesn't have his best stuff.
From the start of the 1993 season,
when he was rushed into, the
starting rotation because of injuries,
to the '94 all-star break, Hentgen
"won 30 games. Only Tom Glavine
and Greg Maddux of the Braves
and Jimmy Key of theYankees had
more victories and all three have
the wealth of experience. Hentgen
is gaining on them rapidly in that
department.
It's clear that Hentgen was no
flash in the pan when he won 19
games for Toronto last season and
it seems likely he'll be invited to a
'few more all-star games.
And in the future, he'll be
pitching in the first inning, not the
seventh, so his pals in Fraser won't
have to worry about hearing his.
name. Baseball fans will know it
without being told. ,
