attends Quaker
conference
Tony and Fran . McQuail from
Lucknow have just returned from
Amherst, Massachusetts, where'they
attended a gathering of almost 2300
Quakers (members of the Religious
Society of Friends)..Quakers came
from all across the. United States,
Puerto Rico, five Canadian Provin-
ces; and Scotland, England, Costa
Rica, Germany, Jamaica, and India.
Eighty-four workshops were given
on a variety of topics, from
Quakerism to political action, from
alternatives to violenceto singing
with joy. •
Their daughters, Rachel and
Katrina, participated in the Junior
Gathering for young people which
had educational events and
recreational activities for each age
group,
The theme "Living the Spirit,
Listening, Acting" was taken from
Paul's Letter to Galatians: "The
fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, generosity,
faithfulness, gentleness; and self
control."
When•asked why they travelled so
far, Fran McQuail said, "Its a uni-
que opportunity to meet with other
Quakers and there's such 'a wide
• variety of . stimulating and interes-
ting activities for everyone in the
family. We meet a lot of old friends
there and since its in a different
location each •year you have a
chance to see a new part of the
U.S.A. too. In 1996 it -may be held
here in Ontario - 'at- McMaster
University ;in Hamilton.
