HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1994-07-20, Page 7Get 'a taste of country this weekend in Blyth In the hard world of the 1990s there may be no free lunch but for visitors to A Taste of Country Food Fair on Saturday, there will be free snacks at least. Lucknow area . will be well represented at the Food Fair at the Blyth and District. Community Centre by the pheasants of River Pheasant Game Farm, 'the apple butter of Tony and Fran McQuail, the maple syrup of Ivan Cranston, the European -style bread of Marianne Bollinger of Dungannon and the wild boar of Harro Wehrmann of Ripley. Many ex- hibitors will be giving out food samples of the products they grow and process. There will be exhibits by groups representing the major commodities • grown in the'region like beef, pork, ,lamb, milk, eggs and corn, as well as more exotic products like buf- falo, wild boar, pheasant, elk and quail eggs. For visitors, (including Elmer Buchanan, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Af- fairs) it will be a chance to talk directly to producers and sample some foods they might not usually • taste. There will also be displays from processors of food, everything from barbecue 'sauce , and maple syrup to toasted oats and European - style breads. Many producers and processors will also have their products for sale foil -those who like the taste of the samples. There will be cooking demonstrations throughout the day conducted by Huron County home economists and using locally grown products. The event, which begins at 11 a.m., closes with a barbecue featuring beef, pork , and turkey from 6 - 7 p.tn. Admission to the Food Fair is $2 for adults, $1 for children under 12, $5 for families with the proceeds going to the Blyth Festival. Bar- becue tickets, which include admis- sion to the Food Fair, are $10 ad- vance. Workshop will teach how to make 'floor cloths' The Bruce County Museum is holdinga special five day workshop in the art and methods of making canvas "floor cloths." Floor cloths are an old tradition . of decorating the early settler homes, made originally from old canvas sails. Today, however, the art has .been restored andcan be found in_ retail boutiques and in Museum exhibits hosted by the practitioners of the art. The instructor for this workshop is Carol Cleary who has had her work on exhibit • at the Royal On- tario Museum and featured in the Century Homes Magazine. Instruction will take place at the Museum Aug. 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 from 9 • a.m. to noon. Pre- registration is a must. Contact the Museum at 797-2080 for details. Tickets are available at the box office 238-6Q00. Gardening workshop in Lucknow Gardening to attract wildlife to yards is increasing in popularity throughout North America. Many . gardeners have discovered the benefits of planting shrubs and wildflowers • to feed songbirds and butterflies. If you would like to learn the basics of gardening for wildlife, plan to attend a workshop on Wed- nesday, July 27, at 7:30p.m. at the Lucknow Town Hall. Chris Hart, of the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) will be talking on garden design with an emphasis on landscaping for wildlife. There will be a slideshow to illustrate the potential for using plants that are native to this part of Ontario. -Everyone attending the workshop will receive a wildflower plant to take home and plant in their yard. In addition, a raffle for a selection of plants to start a full -sun wildflower garden will be held..
