4-H groups forge interprovincialfriendships

The first part of an exchange visit
between Bruce County 4-H mem-
bers and a group from Lamont,
Alberta,. took place • last week. It
was a whirlwind 10 days of ac-
tivities for the group of 11.
Bruce County leader Sharon
Weber, along with her 4-H mem-
bers, had been busy fund-raising
since learning about the exchange
in February.
The Lamont group arrived here
July 5 and was treated to a pot luck
supper at the MacCrostie home in
Bervie. 1t was a time for the two
groups to mingle and learn about
each other.
After one day, early in the week,
set aside for rest and getting ac-
quainted, their mini -tour of sites in
this part of Ontario began. On July
7, • the group left . Walkerton for
Niagara Falls, with many stops in
between, Visits included Guelph
University and the Agricultural
College, and stops at the locks in
St. Catharines, Queenston Heights,
Brock's monument, the vineyards,
Laura Second house, the Gorge and
finally the falls. Everyone enjoyed
'a ride on the Maid of the Mist. The
western contingent was amazed by
Niagara Falls as they toured the
area. Heading back to Toronto that
night, they stayed at the Venture
Inn.
The next day they, toured the
Science Centre, Ontario Place, CN
Tower', Eaton's Centre, Hockey.
Hall of Fame and had supper at the

July 9 and 10. were scheduled as
"rest and relaxation" days, however
some of the group did some farm
touring, visited Canada's Wonder-
land .and the waterslide at Col-
lingwood.
Last Monday, July 11, the were
treated to a tour of the caves at
Wiarton, visited Tobermory, where
they went on the glass bottom boat
and saw shipwrecks down under,
and hiked on Flower Pot Island.
The next day was spent at the
Bruce County Museum in
Southampton, visiting the am-
phitheater and touring the BNPD.
On Wednesday they saw how the
famous Pine River cheese is made,
viewed the fish ladder at Port Al-
bert, toured the Huron County
Museum and Goderich Gaol. The
evening wound up in Blyth where
they enjoyed "He Won't Come in
From the Barn."
Their last day in Ontario was
spent lazingabout on Lurgan's
Beach, where they had an old -
'fashioned barbecue and',later toured
Formosa Brewery.
Friday was an early rising day for
the Lamont group as they made
their way back to Toronto to catch
a flight home.
The Bruce County group, had
three days to recuperate, pack and
'prepare for their departure to Alber-
ta on July 19, where they will be
hosted by the Lamont group.
The exchange was through 4-H

program offered, to counties. on a
revolving basis. Requirements were
involvement in 4-H for at least two
years and to be 14 or older. The 4-
H Council pays the air fare and
participants are responsible for any
applicable registration fees and
insurance.
