.Expos, the team for the season
The last time Montreal had
baseball's best young squad they
were dubbed the team of the 80s.
The business doesn't allow teams to
stay together for a decade anymore,
so the latest edition of the Montreal
Expos will settle for being the team
of the season. This season.
The Expos are battling the Atlanta
Braves atop the National League
and have a great chance to keep
Canada in the World Series and
American TV executives wondering
where exactly the city is in relation
to New York.
And while baseball's billionaires
battle over dollars and cents, the
Expos stand out as a shining
example of what can be done with
a self-imposed salary cap. They've
been• grown, not bought, and are
contending for half the price of the
Braves.
The battle, however, will be
decided by pitchers, not pay
cheques, and Montreal is well
armed for the fight. While their
staff isn't as experienced as
Atlanta's, they're talented and
tough. Ken Hill at 28 has matured

One hundred and twelve
children are registered in four
different levels of soccer this
year. The teams are in the
second half of the season with
the wrap-up tournament set for
Aug. 6, in Goderich.
Five towns are involved in the
league: Wingham, Blyth, Clin-
ton, Goderich and Lucknow.
The Squirts play houseleague
soccer among six teams. They
can be seen every Monday at 7
p.m. at the Kinsmen community
soccer field. Atoms play home
games on Tuesdays, Mosquitos
on Thursdays and Pee Wee on
Wednesdays.
Many hours of volunteer work
by coaches go into keeping these
teams on the move.
The Pee Wees are sporting
new uniforms this year thanks to
Cathy and Brian Knechtel.
The Lucknow Legion spon-
sored the Mosquitos in a Legion
tournament recently.
The soccer league would ap-
preciate anyone saving Primo
UPC labels. They can be given
to any player or coach.

into an ace capable of winning each
time he starts. Left-hander Jeff
Fassero bottomed out in the bullpen
last year and has bounced back as
Montreal's answer to Atlanta's Tom
Glavine. And if unrefined but
gutsy Pedro Martinez doesn't get
beat up for plunking hitters with his
fastball, he'll be a key figure in the
second -half race.
When the starters keep the Expos
close, Montreal has a big advantage
late in the game. The bullpen,
anchored by John Wetteland, is the
best. Wetteland tackles everything
in his life with the fervor of a
hungry dog on a pork chop and has
recently taken to religion and
closing out ball games. The result
is a saver of the 'highest order.
He and. Moises Alou best define
the Expos' determination to win.
They actually spent most of the
winter in Montreal working out and
promoting their team. They caught
a few Canadiens' games too, while
Alou worked his way back from a
career -threatening injury to become
the best of the league's best
outfield. A broken ankle almost
took the game away from the
manager's son, and it scared him so
badly he worked extra hard to do
better than before.
The glue that holds this young
spirited team together is the left -
fielder's dad Felipe Alou, who so
patiently worked for a dozen
seasons in the minors before he got
a call to manage Montreal,
He stands for no nonsense but lets
his team play and has a wealth of
experience from which to draw.
When Larry Walker made a catch
in right field at Dodger Stadium
and tossed the ball to a young fan
before realizing there were only two
outs, Felipe didn't flip out. After
all, in the.mid-60s with Atlanta, he
did the same thing. Made a catch,
put his head down and headed for
the dugout while. a runner dashed
aiOund the bases with only two
outs.
In 38 years as a player and
manager he's seen and done just
about everything in baseball except
win a World Series. That's within
reach for his team of the season.
