C ar adian Pathfinders
assemble in Ashfield
for special event
by Pat Livingston
The skies over Camp Keewaydin,
located on the shores of Lake
Huron in Ashfield Township,
provided spectacular light displays
op consecutive nights last week; for
110 Pathfinders and 40 leaders from
across Canada. The stormy evening
weather was no deterrent to these
seasoned campers who were par-
ticipating in an. interprovincial event
"Kaleidoscope 1994".
"Many of the out -of -province
girls can't believe the storms we've
had this week. They question
whether it's like this all the time,"
said Renee Gingras, of Kincardine,
the Girl Guide camp summer direc-
tor.
The special camp, hosted by
Mapleway Area (Tobermory to
Kitchener -Waterloo) has been in the
planning for two years. Pathfinders
interested in participating were
required to submit a four page
application, along with references.
Five girls were chosen from each
province, with Mapleway getting to
match that number one for one.
Amy Blake, of Lucknow, was one
of those chosen to attend the camp.
Renee says the concept of.
Kaleidoscope was to "bring together,
girls from across Canada into one
cohesive unit. Friendships are
formed; there is no deeper purpose
than to learn, grow and share."
In addition to the week at Camp
Keewaydin, the Pathfinders have
one week of homestay hosted by
Mapleway Area families.
Two Wingham Pathfinders, Becky
and Kelly Gillespie, along with
their mother, Lisa, who is the
Beaver Division Camp Advisor,
hosted Amanda Hjelmeland,
Manitoba and Jennifer Allison,
Thunder Bay, along with leader
Marj Sarna of Manitoba.
During the two week adventure,
the Pathfinders will travel to .the
Farmers' Market, Kitchener, take in
a play at Stratford and enjby a fun
filled day at Canada's Wonderland.
There are four anchors.
in the journey of life
Marjorie MacLean was hostess
for the June meeting of the Ashfield
Women's Missionary Society.
Mayme Wilkins opened the
meeting with a reading "Each Day
Brings a Chance to do Better."
Dorothy Finlayson led in the
Devotions, with Beryl MacDonald
as pianist. Mrs. Finlayson discussed
how, in the journey of life, there
are four anchors: Hope, God's,
Word, Prayer and the Cross of
Christ.
Rollcall. was answered with a
favorite flower and how to care for
it.
Mrs. Wilkins gave the study on
the United States and the Carib-
bean. The conclusion was that every
time the U.S. intervened in , a
country it was because' there were
U.S. interests and investments they
wanted to protect in that country -
not for the good of the country
itself, or its people.
Helen MacLennan was in charge
of the business section. The bazaar
is set for July 16, 1 to 3 p.m.
Reports were read and discussed.
The next meeting is in September.
New friendships were formed
during "Kaleidoscope 1994" a
two-week camping/homestay
adventure for Canadian
Pathfinders. The Gillespie
family of Wingham hosted two
Pathfinders and leader during
the homestay week, Back row,
