Taxpayers unhappy with,
teacher/board dispute •
By Pat Halpin
The two year old dispute between
the Bruce County Board of Educa-
tion and its secondary teachers got
some attention from Bruce County
Council Monday, June 27. I •
Kincardine reeve Alex Clarke said
parents are worried that a work to
rule campaign by the teachers could
escalate into 'a strike by fall. "
"Kids are being used as pawns by
both parties," Clarke said.
"Taxpayers are most unhappy with
the situation.".
Clarke told council that some
parents are trying to get their
children into schools outside of the
county in case of a strike that could
cost there a school year and inter-
fere, with past -secondary plans.
Clarke presented a motion strongly
urging both sides to continue nego-
tiations and settle the dispute before
the new school year.
' The two sides last met June 11.
.That session broke down with little
progress and no date for a future
meeting. .
The 280 teachers have been with-
out a contract since September 1992
and on a work to Tule campaign
since May 5.
