funding
Several municipalities in
Huron County received good
news last week when it was
announced they would be
receiving .funding from jobsOn-
tario.
The Village of Zurich receives
$10,000 for a system op-
timization study of its sewage
collection system, to identify and
help determine better ways to
run the present system. The
objective is to realize savings in
energy and water use.
Exeter will receive $1.888
million for the expansion of the
water supply and storage facility,
ensuring the town has an ade-
quate supply of safe, clean
drinking water now and in the
future. .
Exeter also receives $74,000
for an environmental study
report of its sewage works ex-
pansion. The study report will
assist the town in determining
the size and type of sewage
system it requires to meet its
present needs and to manage
future growth.
The Township . of Stephen
received $36,000 to complete an
environmental study report of its
sewage works expansion, with
the aim of running the treatment
plant• more effectively and
thereby• possibly delaying the
construction of a new facility.
Students
could be
part of
smoking
survey
Local students could be part of a
national survey on attitudes and use
of tobacco among young people.
Separate board trustee Helen
Waechter said Statistics Canada will
, do the survey in the fall, targeting
10-14 year olds at school and 15-19
year olds by telephone.
The board approved the survey,
but doesn't yet know which if any
classes will be chosen to take part .
in the project. '
Information from Stats Canada
'says because the tax cut on tobacco
may prompt more young people to
smoke, other measures are being
taken to discourage young people
from starting the habit. They
include raising the legal age for
buying cigarettes, bigger warning
signs and public education about
the dangers of smoking. The survey
will help determine if those
measures are working.

Only those attending the old-fashioned Christmas concert at the
S.S. # 3 Ashfield (Kintall) school reunion would have any Idea
what these two gents are doing. They were participants in a skit
called "The Fliver". After some effort, the driver, Allan Mac-
Donald gets the old car, John MacKenzie, cranked up and sets
out on his journey. The other part of this skit involved the flat
tires, also portrayed by former students of the school. (Marg'
