School board reconsiders
yard maintenance program
The Bruce -Grey Separate School
Board met in Hanover on June 28,
1994. Complaints about chemical
lawn treatment at school yards in
Mildmay and Formosa have the
separate school board reconsidering
its yard maintenance program.
The board has had several
complaints about children with
allergic reactions to chemical weed
killers and fertilizers applied to
school playgrounds.
Spraying on weekends and pos-
ting signs were considered, but
trustee Christine Zettel said that still
leaves children playing in chemical
residue.
"Definitely that's the concern,"
Zettel said. "I don't think that we
have looked into it thoroughly
enough to say that no, there isn't a
residue. I don't think even as a
society we know the effects of all
those 'chemicals onus."
Zettel also said posting signs is
"admitting there could be a
Problem".
"Maybe thi's is a warning sign that
we should be .looking at an alter-
native to this kind of weed control," -
she Aoted. •
Trusteee Tom O'Dwyer said he
contacted lawn care spokespeople
and was told there is no residue
after 24 hours if there is a dew or
rain after application.
"It's sold everywhere. You have
to be licenced to apply it commer-
cially. Almost every home owner
uses it at one time or another,"
O'Dwyer. said in defence of the
chemical treatment plan. "I don't
know why we're only getting
complaints from two areas of the
county."
Trustee Ken Waechter said there
have been complaints in the
Walkerton area as well. He noted a
woman was taken to hospital with
an allergic reaction after entering a
school where the grounds had been
treated.. But Chair Bill Zettel said
there was no proof .chemicals at the
school caused the attack.
"This person is so sensitive it
could have come •from a whiff
when she was driving along the
road," Zettel said. • •
Zettel also said the board is "be-
tween a rock and a hard place"
because it will get complaints if its
school yards aren't well maintained.
Christine Zettel argued that allergies
may be just the first •symptom of
the harm that lawn chemicals can
cause,
"Years ago we didn't • think
second hand smoke was bad. Now
smoking is banned in all our •
schools," she said.
Zettel offered to help board main-
tenance staff find an alternative to
chemical lawn care., .
Bill Zettel accepted the offer and
suggested using the Mildmay or
Formosa schools as a pilot project..
"No one is opposed .to looking at
alternatives. I just, don't know what
it is," Bill Zettel said.

Time on the clock doesn't matter;
she's always golfing in the `dark'
I'm one of those golfers who
always believes she's playing in
the `dark'. There are so many
different theories to remember
while pursuing this sport, that I
liken it to my aforementioned
statement.
However, on the weekend, I
truly was playing in the dark. It's
a new pursuit in the area - night
golf. Some genius came up with
the idea and is probably nicking a
mint off it. The balls are sort of a
clear rubber with a hole through
the middle of it, where you put in
a little stick that through some
process is illuminated.
It was a social evening and the
golfing was "just for fun",
however some of those more
expert than I were just as,serious
as if it was a daytime match.
The sky was full of millions of
stars, tint no moon was in sight as
we started out at 10 p.m. Walking
around in the dark was a chore in
itself. Thanks to a couple of flash-
lights we managed not to fall in
any creeks, roll down any hills or
walk into trees, although Sue, the
other female in our group; came
close to being a permanent fixture
on one of the hundreds of trees on
the course.
• The men in our group decided
the•women should tee off first,
because they weren't too sure of
what club to use on these rub -

berized balls. For some unknown
reason the poorest golfer in the
group - myself - was elected to
have the honors. I hate being the
first off the tee - I still get embar-
rassed when I screw up, even
though I've had lots of practice -
at screwing up that is.
Lady luck was with me, as I
teed• up on the first hole. Hubby
waspointing the flashlight at the
ground where my ball was sitting,
in an effort to help me get my
bearings. That little green il-
luminated ball flew through the
air, missed the creek and landed in
a perfect location for me to get a
nice chip onto the green (it was a
short hole). I was rather proud of
myself, but that feeling didn't last
long. It was downhill from there
on in.
The golf course was quite_a
sight, as the various groups' green
illuminated balls flew the air and
landed. It was like a scene from •
an outer space movie.
There's always a comedian or
two in any group. On, our second
hole, one of the foursomein front
of us decided to re -locate the pin,
which had affixed to it two
glowing green lights to let you
know where it was located. Now
the other three in our group, being
very familiar with the course,
couldn't quite understand what the
pin was doing in that location. The
two males had quite a bit to say
about Leroy, the greenskeeper. I
won't repeat their comments;
suffice it to say, they were eating
their words about his lack of com-
petence when on the next hole the
comedian cracked up laughing as
the men chipped towards the pin
that was no where near the hole.
It took close to two hours to
play the five designated holes.=It
was a fun night, not one to be
taken seriously, but one that
resulted in many stories to be
shared at the 19th hole, which
thankfully was closed. My stories
wouldn't have sounded any dif-
ferent as I said, I'm• always
playing in the `dark'.
