New service fills important role
Last week the Honorable Ruth
Grier, Minister of Health, an-
nounced the proclamation of Bill
101 in the Ontario Legislature. This
bill will significantly, improve the
services for people seeking long-
term care in the province. As of
July 1, 1994, anyone -seeking ad-
mission into a long-term care
facility (Nursing Home and Homes
for the Aged) must contact local
Placement Coordination Services
(PCS).
After months of planning, the
staff at the Bruce Grey Placement
Coordination Services (PCS) will
begin working directly with clients

includes the ODHIC awards presen-
tations and an update from the

Lucknow. Proceed one concession
north of Lucknow,turn west past
the first concession on the 'south
side of the road.
on July 4. Cheryl Birr, PCS Coor-
dinator in Walkerton, sees the PCS
as filling an important role in this
area. "Choosing the right nursing
home or home for the aged requires
a lot of thought. We will help
match people with the facility that
best meets their needs. All the
information they and their families
will need to make the best decision
is at our fingertips."
Birr points out that in the past, all
the work contacting different
facilities, finding out admission
requirements, and discovering what
services are available were left up
to the individual and their family.
"People were overwhelmed with the
number of things they were ex-
pected to find out and the number
of phone calls they had to make. A
lot of planning goes into a move, to
a long-term care facility."
According to local figures, Birr
expects the, service to help place
hundreds of people each year.
Along with the individual -and his
or her family, Birr will find the
most suitable facility in the area.
"Once it is established that a long-
term care facility is the best option
for a person, we consider a whole
host of things,".explains Birr.
"Including therapy needs, how close
family members are to the facility,
even whether pets are allowed for
visits."
PCS will keep track of each per-
son's wants and needs. The service
will also maintain an up-to-date
waiting list to make sure that in-
dividuals have access to the facility
best able to meet their needs.
"The decision to go into a nursing
home or home for the aged is
probably the toughest one to make,"
says Bin. "But the decisions:that
follow are just as important.. There
are a lot of different facilities out
there. Each one has a range of
services to offer. The key is to
make sure that whatever facility a
person chooses, it meets all his or
her needs: PCS will ensure that
people have an equal and fair:
chance to get into the facility of
their choice."
There are 20 long-term care
facilities within the jurisdiction of
the Bruce Grey PCS.
