SOUTHAMPTON - There are a
couple of places left in the Bruce
County Museum's caning and
rushing workshop on July 4, 5 and
7. Prospective projects -must be
submitted to the museum on June
28, from 1' to 5 p.m. Instructors
John and Hazel Higgins will cal-
culate the ' supplies needed and
assess its suitability for the`
workshop. Advanced registration is
required; $30 for museum members
and $35 for the general public.
Steam and Sail
Steam and Sail opens on July 1,
when artist Rod Adam will have a
collection of his historical water-
colors hanging in the Extensions
Gallery until Sept. 5. His paintings
depict the local marine history
based on existing scenes' as well as
historical photographs.
Spirit of the Inland Sea
Spirit of the Inland Sea, an
original multi -media musical event,
debuts July 16 and 1.7 at the
Museum. Feel the anguish of Cap-
tain John Munro as first his family
members and then the majestic
`Azov' fall prey to an unforgiving
lake. Join the crew of the steamer
'Bruce Mins' on their last heroic
voyage ,around Cape Hurd. Relive
the days of the 'Passenger Pigeon'

will benefit nature centre
Attention 'golfers! Plan to take
part in the Maitland Conservation
..Foundation's Team Golfing Tour-
nament to be held on Saturday, July
2 at the Goderich Sunset 'Golf Club.
The emphasis will he on having
fun for this "Texas Scramble, 4
Ball -Best -Ball" event. Get a team
together and plan to attend. •
Proceeds from the tournament
will - support the conservation
education activities and facilities at
the Wawanosh Nature. Centre'. To

Registration includes your choice
• of nine or 18 holes of golf and a,
steak BBQ dinner, The event •will
inkIude prizes for the -.top three
teams. The Sunset Golf Club is

important need for conservation and•
environmental education in our

The Wawanosh Nature Centre has
beet, operating for 10 ,years and
attracts about 5,000 students annual-
ly from Huron, Perth, Bruce and
Wellington Counties. The 'Centre
provides opportunities for students -
to Icarn about the environment and
teaches. the need to manage and
protcct.soil and water resources. '
Activities arc available for
students from kindergarten through
Grade 10. The Centre •is located on
concession six/seven, Nature Centre
Road, in East Wawanosh Township.
The Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority (MVCA). operates -the
Centre:
The Maitland Conservation Foun-
dation is a registered, charitable,
nonprofit organization that supports
Conservation projects undertaken by
the MVCA. • -
Tax arrears up in: Southampton
Councillor says ratepayers
can't pay more ed taxes
Southampton town councillor
Norm Gurr says the Bruce County.
Board of Education has reached the
limit of its ratepayers' ability to'
foot. the tax bill. '
Gurr . said ' Southampton's tax
arrears reached 11 per cent last
year, up from 5 per cent 1989.
Gurr indicated school taxes play a
big role in those figures, and urged -
the board to follow town council's
lead in looking for ways to cut
costs.

The Bruce Board of Education set
a 0 per cent 'increase in its 1994
budget: Gurr wants to lobby the
. province to implement education
funding reform's in the Fair Tax.
Commission report. 1-16 also . sug-
gested setting up board -based
groups of parents, teachers, students
and ratepayers to find new ways to
finance education and, provide
programs without cutting quality.
Board chair Barry Schmidt ap-
plauded the idea , and suggested.

through classroom instruction and
field trips.

Thirty hours of mainstage music

Celtic Festival Aug. 12 to 14. There
will also be three workshop areas,
children's activities and theme food,

canine story
Beautiful Joe: A Dogs Life opens
June 22 at the Meaford Opera •
House. •
. This new . Canadian play with
music tells the story of Beautiful -
Joe, Meaford's most famous canine
resident. Joe was horribly abused
by a cruel .master, and then rescued
by a loving family who nursed him •
back to health. His life has been
chronicled in a book originally
published in 1894, and remains in
print today. A historical plaque
marks his grave in Beautiful Joe
park in Meaford. •
The play's message is farli
reaching and deals with family
values and the struggle to keep the'.
family. together in changing times,
using tthe Beautiful Joe story as • a
'backdrop.
Beautiful Joe runs June 22 to
June 25 ,and June 28 to July 2.
