Age at Metarity Required GlIest column It's a paper jungle out there by Shelley Cumberland Iroquois Chieftain News Editor There should be a support group for politicians... Politicians Awareness Group...' or something similar, where politicians -can go to hash things out with other politicians to keep them current on what is going on in the world. An information bank from which to draw knowledge in such areas as being aware of what the electorate wants and expects; that such items as "waste not want not" could refer to more than trying to get a child to finish the few remaining morsels of food on his plate at dinner; or to enable the politicians of past years to understand the workings of what is expected today,' a perkfree society! From media accounts, it 'appears there is a spring cleaning under way, and let's hope it's all sorted out in time for the season, but there are many areas that are getting lost in the backwash. Cuts may have affected the MP's ability to mail useless pieces of direct mail to the homes_ of constituents, that inevitably clutter the garbage pails at the post office and then spill over onto the floor. But... now the ever- growing popularity of fax machines can take the place of Canada Post. As a 'newspaper, this office is flooded with information every day, much of which now arrives via the fax rather than a box. It's much more convenient, and' let's face it, the fewer hands it touches the more likely information, documents, etc., will arrive safe and sound. One day last week we had a mammoth fax .coming. through, 27 pages including cover sheet, an- nouncing what every . little municipality in the province got in the way of infrastructure funding under the federal/provincial • ■ ■ program.,The bells and sirens went off as the eccentric fax with .a per- sonalityof its own decided, hey, not today, it's just a bit much don't ya say. Jam after jam, as the government fax attempted to push its way through into our office. So, as it says, I called the number on the top to see if they could just send me the pertinent information regarding this area and county. After all what do we care what Woodstock, Halton Hills or Scugog got! A polite and foreign voice in the • 416 area code informed me I really had to receive all 27 pages, because the company 'she worked for received a contract from the government to send every newspaper in the province all 27 pages ... half of which is in French! And so she really did not have any choice but to tie up our fax machine for an undetermined amount of time. Now considering it takes quite some time to receive a monster fax like this, not to mention the money spent on this end, it cost quite a sum to receive these 27 golden pages, half of which I couldn't even read! Not that it was her fault or anything, I suppose I could have learned French, in which case I wouldn't have needed the English half of the fax, would I. Any which way you look at this situation, I, had to read the fax only once, and so required only one set of documents. It really is a paper jungle out there isn't it!
