TRAIL program
Parents of gifted students in
Bruce County are concerned about
cost cutting measures they say
could destroy the program now
offered to those students.
Spokeswomen Joan Janes told
trustees it's a myth that gifted
students will do well with or
P without special programs. Janes
said bright children often act out or
drop out if they don't get the "di-
fferentiated" program they neecj.
Janes and other parents are wor-
ried that the board is cutting back
its gifted or "TRAIL" program from
three full-time staff two years ago
to two part-time staff next year.
Janes wants the board to keep two
full time. TRAIL teachers, and
warned that laving the job to
classroom resource withdrawal
teachers "will destroy the program
in some schools."
Janes aid those teachers must deal
with a broad spectrum of special
education students, and don't have
the skills to properly motivate
'gifted students.
Superintendent Sharon Ribey
admitted the board will "restru-
cture" the program that serves 150

"In fact, all our staff are worthy
of recognition in the way they
regularly undertake their duties and
provide our services to the com-
munity," said the CEO.

only served one year, Bev Brown'
who served 31/2 years, Doris Inglis

Thompson-Westman who served 11

Writer calls
Bouchard an
`arrogant' man
TO THE EDITOR
To the editor:
On June 20, 1994 separatist Bloc
Quebecois leader Lucien Bouchard
will qualify for a gold-plated MP
pension worth an . estimated
$850,001.
That's right! After only six years
in the House of Commons
Bouchard will be eligible to receive
an inflation -proof, lifetime pension
immediately upon retirement,
regardless of age.
He says he's "earned" it.,
What arrogance! A man who
wants to wreck Canada says he's
earned benefits from the richest
pension plan in Canadian public life
a pension plan, it should be noted,
which is largely funded by
Canadian taxpayers.
What's worse, under the current
rules Bouchard will continue to
receive pension benefits even if he
becomes the first president of an
independent Quebec republic!
In short, Lucien Bouchard seems
willing to separate himself from
everything Canadian except our tax
dollars.
Fortunately, a way exists to stop
this outrage. All Parliament has to
do is pass a law which would
prevent Quebec MPs from collec-
ting their fat pensions if their
province separates.
The sooner Parliament acts on
this matter the better.
Let's tell Bouchard and his
separatist gang that if they leave
Canada, they 'won't take our money
with them.

President„
National Citizens' Coalition.
sels, Town of Wingham reps Bob
Pike and Julie Deans and member -
at -large Doug Fortune. There was
no representative for the Village of
Brussels, so the position will have
to be filled by the board.

gifted Grade 7 and 8 students. "The
program may look a little different
next year, but it won't be cut back
to the point we're not offering it to
the students," Ribey pledged.
Director of Education Paul Mar-
tindale applauded the delegation for
its offer to help with transportation
and fundraising for the TRAIL
program, and said he is interested
in their proposal to reschedule the
program to. make best use of
teachers' time.
