Brookside classes on the road

All of our two -pitch teams are
anxiously awaiting the tournament
on June 16. We're ready to have a
great time, and hopefully to WIN!
The coaches are Mrs. Tebbutt (Sr.
Girls), Ms. Arbuckle (Sr. Boys),
Miss Wise (Jr. Girls), and Mr. Culp
(Jr.. Boys). GO BROOKSIDE!!!!
The grade 8's are counting the
days until graduation, (12 more days
to be exact!). They graduate on the
27th of June.
Miss Roberts'grade 1/2 class had
an exciting visit to three farms on
Thursday June 2nd.
They went to Henry and Pam Van
Dyke's pig farm, where they got to
hold the baby pigs. Then they went
to Frank and Loreen Alton's chicken
farm, where they got to help Frank
put his eggs into .cartons, and after
that they went to Sue Drennan's
dairy farm, where they got to feed.

Another major highlight was get-
ting a crate of chocolate milk. They
had a lot of fun!
Miss Roberts' Libary group has
now finished their "big book."
"Welcome, Welcome, to our farm!"
has wonderful stories and il-
lustrations! Mrs. Young's and Miss
Anguish's .grade 2/3 class is busily
preparing for an "Egyptian Party" to
celebrate the completion of a year-
long illustrator study unit! Meeting
once a week, they followed "Zoom
Upstream" on a trip to Egypt- It was
BROOKSIDE BROADCAST
so interesting, they ended up lear-
ning all about Egypt, and correspon-
ding with the illustrator, Eric Bed;
dows.
The party will feature Egyptian
decorations, outfits and food, "Zoom
Upstream" will be shared once
more, and they will dance to "Walk
Like an Egyptian"!
Also last Thursday, Mr. Hazlitt's
class went on a day trip to Toropto.
They went to the Royal Ontario
Museum (R.O.M.), the Planetarium,
Casa Loma, and .the Yorkdale Mall..
The museum was a lot of fun.
Casa Loma was really awesome,
especially the towers, and students
were really amazed by the Yorkdale
Mall. It was Huge.
Room 102/103, 101, and Room 6
went to the Literacy Festival in
Clinton . last week. They were
divided into small groups, and had
chances to hear talented storyteller
Richard Thompson, to pai ticipate in
drama with a story session, to watch
special performances in the
grandstand, to read special "remini-
scence" stories, and to listen to
special guest story readers. Many of
the students came back with their
faces painted:
Rooms 102/103 and 101 also went
to the Science Centre on June 10,
1994.
This is trip time for many classes
and groups. Grade 7 students have
just returned from a wonderful week
in Ottawa, and grade 6 students had
a trip to the Toronto Zoo.
The Library Club is looking for-
ward to a trip to the Huron Country
Playhouse at Grand Bend to see
"Peter Pan" and .to have a picnic
lunch on the beach.
You will be pleased to hear that
the Library Club raised $177.63
for a much needed new book rack.
• for the library.
As you know from the last news
from Brookside, the money was
raised with the Dime Dance and the
Fun Fair. They're almost there, only
$100 to go (to approximately
$500)!!
The Yearbook Committee are
working FULL SPEED AHEAD on
the Grade 8 yearbook. It will go to
each graduate, the Board of
Education, and one stays at the
school so everyone can remember
the Class of '93/'94.
Alison Hackett is acting as editor,
with many talented committee mem-
bers working hard as writers and
artists.

Supper guests stop in Purple Grove
The June Purple Grove W.I.
meeting was held at the home of
Wilma Sutton. President Dianne
Simpson opened the meeting with a
poem. Marilyn Reid read the scrip:.

Joan Martyn of Lucknow. She
showed slides of, her flower beds,
then told us how and where she
started her perennial seeds. Mem-
bers
embers were able to buy some of the
beautiful plants she brought for
sale. Joan was thanked by Cheryl
Bridge and presented her with a
lovely rose bush. A cup of tea and
cheesecake brought the meeting to
a close.
Carmep Farrell spent Sunday
afternoon with Andrea Moulton at
Green Acres Camp.
Christina and . Carmen Farrell
attended the 4-H Funfest in Walker-
ton.
Susan Robert, Garrett and Curtis
visited Jack and Janet Farrell.
Fran Farrell will be hosting the
Ripley District Horticulture meeting
June 21 at 1:30 p.m.
A good crowd from the . Grove
attended the wedding reception of.
Vicki McKee and Mike Stewart in
Ripley Saturday evening.
Wary and Linda Thompson, and
Nell and Ricl!ard. Murphy of Mis-
sissauga spent the weekend with -
Harvey and Wilda/Thompson.
Bessie Moulden accompanied
Bette MacLeod to Smithville on
Thursday. Bette spent the time
with Evelyn Smith. Bessie went on
to Fonthill to visit her sister Jean
Philips,who returned home with
them Sunday.:. .
Tanya and Jenny Farrell, Krista
Armstrong, Andrea Moulton, and
Christina Farrell took part in the
Marilyn Carruthers piano recital..
We are .glad to hear Aurel
Armstrong got home from London
hospital Sunday.. We wish you a
speedy recovery.: Marjorie spent
some time with Helen Smith while
Aurel was in hospital.
Congratulations to Fran Farrell
who received her five year 4-H
leader certificate.
Marion Gamble' was supper guest
of Ernie and Joan Rae Sunday.
Josie and Bill Landon of Blyth,
Bill's sister, daughter and baby
from Nova Scotia visited : and
lunched with Marion Gamble on
Saturday.
Bible Study was held at the home
of Alma Gllfles on Tuesday mor-
ning.
Doris and Oran Rock, and Rose
and Tom Broom are enjoying a trip
to Nova Scotia to visit with friends.
Earl and June Elliott motored to
Bracebridge and spent the weekend
with Ian and Sheri Elliott.
Opal Dore called on Katherine
Collins last week and Sunday
katherine and Marjorie Thompson
visited with Glen and Doreen
Young of Kinloss.
Ripley Wild Ones 4-H horse club
learning about hazards in the barn

On May 1$ the Ripley Wild Ones
Horse 4-H Club held its second
.meeting. Everyone managed to
make it .to the meeting and the
members had an enjoyable time.
They discussed first aid and the
President Larissa Brooks showed
them the various items and their use
from her own first aid kit. . The
members travelled out to the barn
where they discussed the hazards
that could happen in a barn. After
Youth Leader Denise Tadla
discussed bandaging and unsafe
items to look for in a barn, they
travelled back to the house. The
• meeting was closed and every6ne
enjoyed a snack prepared by Alicia
Pollock and Lisa MacLean.
Lions' Elimination Draw Winners,
Congratulations to David Lowry.
His $250 winning ticket was the
first drawn in the Ripley and
District Lions' Club Elimination
Draw Friday, June 10. Bonnie
Taylor (Lucknow), Gerald Coiling,
Barb and Charles Liddle, Bert El-
liott, John. Wray, and David Coiling
each received $100. Tension
mounted as Terry Paquette and
Michelle Ferris (Kincardine) each
received $500. The $750 ticket
went to Judy Coiling, the $1000 to
Danny and Una MacDonald, and
the Grand prize ticket of $1,500
went to Don and Diane Simpson:

Ripley Happy Hearts
On a warms, sunny Friday, June •
10, the Ripley Happy Hearts held
their picnic. in Gore Park. They
sang Grace and while 47 members
enjoyed a bountiful pot luck dinner
the pupils from Ripley -Huron
Central School sang several selec-
tions with leaders Mrs. Van Veghel
and Mrs. Jean MacDonald. Five
students from Ripley District
School Band played some selections
which were enjoyed by all.
Cameron MacAuley introduced and
thanked the students for their per-
formance.
Happy Anniversary was sung for
Chester and Irene Emmerton's 52nd
wedding anniversary. Those
wishing to attend the Zone picnic in
Mildmay on June 28 were asked to
meet at the •Post Office at 9 a.m.
Ruth congratulated those atteutling
the Hanover Senior, Games Joan
and Gordon Fry, Peg Rome, Kay
Collins, and Jim MacDonald for
Bowling; Anna MacTavish and
Helen McCreath played bridge;
Francis Boyle,. and Jack Scott'par-
ticipated in crokinole; Mark
Harkness and Lizzie Geddes euchre;
and Jack Scott participated :. in
snooker. .
Chester Emmerton chaired a good
program which began with selec-
tions by Don Robertson onviolin
accompanied by Marg Harkness at
the piano: Irene Emmerton had a
couple of reading and a joke, fol-
lowed by Leslie Manners with a
recitation and yodeling. The
Seniors enjoyed more numbers by
Don and Marg, piano selections by
Marg and violin numbers by Irene
Emmerton.
Chester thanked everyone who
worked and took part in the
program, Best wishes for a good
summer, hope to see everyone at
the 'next meeting Sept. 9.
