Students look forward
to visit in Toronto
by Bethany Luchies,
Marie Askes
and Jessa Kuyvenhoven
"Yeah, go, go, go...Come on, you
can do it!" You would have heard
thisa lot on June 3, as it was
LDCS's track and field day. There
were lots of events to enter, starting
with the mile and ending with the
triple jump. In between were the
ball throw, high jump, sprints and
miniature. golf.
• At the end of the day, the
students received either a first,
second or third place ribbon, and a
little card with the events listed and
their score. A special treat was
popsicles.
This year, like every year, many
teachers and parents helped out at
the events. LDCS sends,a big thank
you for making' field day fun..
Toronto, . here . we come. The
seventh and eighth grade students
are looking forward to their year-
end trip to Toronto. They'll get to
tour the CN Tower, visit the
Science Centre, and even go to the
MacDonalds for supper.
...The End...At LDCS, novel
studies are coming to a close. • The
students agreed that Anne of Green
Gables, I Am David and Owls in
the Family were all good books.
"We like kindergarten." Christina,
Jessica, Michelle, Lisa, Lincoln and
Kris all exclaimed, "We like
playtime."
Carolyn liked playing games,
Joelle liked swinging on the swings
at recess, Ashley liked learning her
letters, and Melissa liked the fact
that she could invite her kindergar-
ten class to her birthday party!
Then came Patricia and Jeremy
who didn't know what part of
kindergarten they liked best, and
both Ryan and Alexandria liked
learning how to read.
"Hey...don't get . met wet!" On
May 30, the Grades 6, 7 and 8
travelled to the Wawanosh Nature
Centre. There they teamed about
conservation and did some conser-
vation projects like planting trees
and building animal shelters. The
students' favorite part was when
they got to build minnow shelters in
the stream. They did this by piling
rocks up to make a kind of
pyramid. The holes between the
rocks had to be small enough for
only the minnows, not for larger
fish.
It was a hot day, and the students
agreed it was a perfect way to cool
down..
"That was good...No, start over, a
bit louder this time." The kindergar-
ten through Grade 7 students have
been hearing this a lot for the past
two weeks. LDCS has been' busy
working on its graduation program.
The musical section is titled 'We
`DCS EXPRESS
like .Sheep' and is about a sheep
who likes to run Away. There are
songs to sing, parts Au act, and
stories to tell, so everyone has a
part in the play. The program is to
be held June 22, and honors the'
Grade 8 graduates.
The school year is coming to a ,
close and we thought we'd take you
on a trip down memory lane. We
actually just want' to follow up ,
some stories and give you an idea•
of other stuff the school did.
- The baseball tournament went
very well. The boys placed first
while the girls lost only one game.
-The students learning recorder are
coming along great. They plan on
playing songs, for the graduation
play.
-The kindergarten class has suc-
cessfully Teamed all their ABC's. '
.In April we held .a Grandparents'
Day, where seniors and
grandparents could tour the school,.
and watch a, program students did.
It was a success.
-The Science Fair projects were
terrific this year.
-The open house was well attended.
-Earlier in the year, the sixth,
seventh and eighth graders par-
ticipated in a soccer tournament.
The girls placed first and the boys
second.
-The first and second grade students
planted seeds for their plant unit.
The seeds are now starting to sprout
and grow into plants, almost ready.
for their gardens.
-In honor of Arbour Day, the
school was given 10 trees which the
students were able to plant around
the school.
In all, this has been an exciting
schoolyear, and we're glad to have
shared it with you through this
column.
Editor's note: This is Bethany's
last column as she is graduating to
F.E. Madill Secondary School.' We
thank you Beth, for your excellent
effort and leadership irr putting
together this column for the past
two years.
