write those letters
Dear editor:
The May 11, 1994 Lucknow
Sentinel carried an announ-
cement that the Lucknow
Medical Centre will be CLOSED
Wednesday at noon until Tues-
day at 9 a.m.' over the 24th May
holiday weekend. In case of
emergency, we are to call 357-
3210 (Wingharn Hospital) or
maybe Dr. Hanlon will be able
to see "some selective cases."
This is unacceptable. That's
51/2 days over one of the busiest
weekends of the year.
Lucknow's population., of just
over 1100, includes 470 seniors;
that's 43 per cent. The national
average is just over 11 per cent.
The Medical Centre serves the
village and the bulk of three
• townships - Ashfield, Kinloss
and West Wawanosh - whose
combined population (including
seasonal residents) totals over
6200, plus transient residents in
campgrounds.
No one is suggesting that
"our" Doctor does not need a
holiday! With this type of
workload, he must be exhausted.
He does need help! Someone to
cover for holidays; share long
hours at the hospital; help in

emergencies or few epidemics;
and give time for him to keep up
with the latest medical bulletins
and/or attend seminars.
A' few weeks ago, the public
was asked, through the Sentinel,
to write letters conceming our
Health Care (good or bad) to be
forwarded with an application
for designation as an under -
serviced area. Now is the time.
Talking own' the street will not
help. The politicians must hear
us. •
This is the same area recently
served by three of Canada's best
GP's. We lost two excellent
men, far tbo 'young. Don't let
this be number three. '•
Let's defuse this bomb before
it explodes. Write letters. It's not
too late, yet. Or cut .out this
letter ,and sign it yourself and
mail to your local politicians,.
