Make good use of pasture
Effective use of pasture depends
on good fencing. The best barrier to
livestock leaving home is an abun-
dant pasture. Normally livestock
will not wander if they have lots to
eat. Thus a well managed pasture
will lead to productive and con-
tented animals.
Components of a good fencing
system - Most producers like to
have a secure perimeter fence with
page wire or five strains of high
tensile strength electric fence. If the
power fails or the electric energizer
is hit by lightning then the livestock
are still held within.
Interior fencing is best when it is
movable so that the grazing can be
managed according to the
availability of the 'pasture and its
plants. Our best pastures contain
both grasses and legume plants. In
the early season the animals will
normally forage on the grasses and
gradually switch over to legumes as
the season progresses.' In a well
managed pasture, grasses never
develop seed heads. If the grasses
are foraged down or clipped, the
plants continue to push up new

shoots or tillers. These are much
more appetizing and nutritious than
old seed heads to animals. In most
of Ontario's pastures 80 per cbntof
the production is achieved by July
15 - 30, thus removing a portion of
the animals after this date will
allow a much higher animal density
in the early season. Another method
is to cut a portion of pasture area
for hay and then providing this, area
as pasture in the later season. Sup-
plemental feeding of forage or grain
on pasture iS much harder to
manage. It is quite often not cost
effective. For more information on
Feeding Grain on Pasture refer to
