by Donna Fielder
and Mike Van Niekert
Earth Week came to Brookside!
During the week the Litterless
Lunch Committee made regular
checks of classroom wastebaskets,
keeping a record of lunch litter, and
encouraging everyone to aim for
reusable•containers. On Earth Day,
students enjoyed a variety of
centres including tree planting,
playground cleanup, investigating
the water cycle, singing Earth Day
songs, and making a giant
Junkasaurus out of junk mail.
Earth Day guests included folk
singer Joanne Durst, Esther Buck,
from the Maitland Valley Conser-
vation Authority, who led outdoor
activities, Phil Paquette, from the
Huron County Health Unit, who
discussed ways to avoid polluting
local farmland, and Anita Holmes-
Mitra, who shared a• wonderful
story.
Also during Earth Week the
Library Club .and Mrs. Dozois'
room were involved in a "Work
Bee" at the Ashfield Landfill Site.
They picked up all the paper that
was blowing around the entrance
and. in a neighboring field. ' The
money earned was shared by the

two groups to help with book pur-
chases and the purchase of a
Library book rack.
Grade 8 students in Room 10 are
exploring the world of Greek myths
in a Mythology Unit. Great heroes,
goddesses, gods, and monsters are
some of the beings they will meet
in this unit. They're finding some
interesting explanations for nature
in the ancient stories!
Mrs. Hodsman's room 1, Grade
1/2 are wheeling their way into
research on wheels. They have
looked to see where you can find
wheels (e.g. the playground, in the
classroom, and at home), and they
have a display of different wheels
(e.g. pizza cutter, ice cream scoop,
tires off a toy car). They are also
doing a number of experiments. In
the experiments they are changing
the size of ramps, and the sizes and
weights of wheels. Some students
are involved in a creative thinking
group to the Library, making
wheeled creations . and brainstor-

various projects during Pitch -In .
Week, May 2 to 8.
The Brownies tentatively have
plans to clean up the Kinsmen
ball diamond and park area,
which leader Diane Duvall says
"really isn't in too bad of shape
right stow." Other tentative plans
include doing a couple blocks in
the main street area.
Pitch -In Week, according to its
organizers, 'plays an important
and ever-increasing role in hel-
ping provincial, regional and
local governments deal with
debris which has been
deliberately or thoughtlessly
dumped by people who don't
appreciate the effect their actions
have on wildlife, . the environ-
ment and tourism.
Way to .go Brownies!
