HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1994-05-04, Page 10Page 10 — Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, May 41394 Sabres/Devils NHL game makes; history Terry Gregson wiped the sweat from his eyes and looked up a1 the clock in Buffalo's Memorial Auditorium. For an exhausted moment; in a game and night that had melded together, he wasn't sure if the 1:20 he saw was time remaining or time of day. Actually, it was both. There was just over a minute left in the third overtime period of a hock- ey game that didn't end until almost 2 a.m. Gregson was the referee for the sixth.. longest game in NHL history. It was decided by Dave Hannan's goal at 5:43 of the fourth overtime period and gave the Buffalo Sabres a 1-0 win over the New Jersey Devils. When the winning goal was scored and the fans went wild, Grcgson, like the players, finally had a chance to relax. "When the puck went into the net my body was cheering," said Gregson after a day's rest at his home near Toronto, "but my mind was saying 'this is a neat sporting event to be a part of and it's too bad it has to end."' The players seemed glad it was finally over. Six hours and 15 Minutes. is enough hockey for one night and that"s for the guys who took a 30 -second shift and then sat down., The officials didn't get a chance leave the ice. "My back and knees were . getting pretty sore," lamented Gregson of the longest night in his 10 -year career. "When play stopped, I tried to relax and play mind games to stay sharp. Bet- ween periods (linesmen) Gord Brosekar, Brian Murphy and I sat around in the dressing room and talked about staying in the game. We also wrapped oursel- ves in towels because we were so wet it started to get cold." It wasn't a routine night for the officials by any means. Three times Gregson and the video goal judge called back apparent Buffalo goals. Once the puck didn't actually go into the net. A second time there was interference with the goalie and ' on another occasion, the puck was kicked in. When the winning goal was finally scored, one of the Sabres had a foot in the crease but the goal counted. Had Gregson ruled otherwise, the game might still be going or could have been postponed because of a protest that would have made the Rock- et Richard riot seem like, an Easter parade. Of course, there were still protests. Both ' coaches complained about calls that didn't go their way. John Muck - ler of the Sabres felt the goals his team scored in regulation time were perfectly legal. Jac- ques Lernaire of the Devils thought the winning goal should have been disallowed, too. It wouldn't be hockey if the coaches didn't have a post -game whine about the referee. When the marathon ended and the players left to prepare for Game 7, Gregson packed up his equipment and drove home. "I got there at 4:30 a.m. and had to' have something to eat. I was starving. Then I slept.for about three hours, had a whirlpool and went out to buy a lawn -mower so I could cut the grass." Now that seems like an unfair penalty! 1MOWDEN INaWAil01W RES. • FARM • IND Spuealot:e9 URETHANE FOAM AND BLOWN CELLULOSE INSULATION (519) 528-2279 This•.
