The Lucknow town hall is now
home to a large picture depicting.
the Relief of Lucknow (India) and
the triumphant meeting of
Havelock, Outram and Sir Colin
Campbell in Nov. 1857.
The family of the late Robert C.
' Symes, who died in 1994, presented
the picture to Reeve Stuart Reavie
last week.
The picture was found in the
basement of Mr. Symes' uncle, Don
Andrews of England, when Mr
Symes visited there 20 years ago.
Some years later, around the early
'80s, Mr. Andrews wrapped it and
placed it in a Targe suitcase so the
picture could be safely transported
to Canada. .
Gloria Symes said it was always
her husband's intention to donate
the picture to the town, and she and
the children wanted to fulfill his
wish that the picture be available
for viewing by any resident of this
village which is named after Luck -
now, India.
The picture, which had some
water stains, was restored by
Snyder Studio, Wingham, and now
hangs in place of prominence in the
town hall.
For those who may.be unfamiliar
with the association between the
two Lucknows, we reprint segments
from the village historical chronicle
"A Glimpse of the Past".
James Somerville is referred to as
the ,"Father of Lucknow". In 1858,
Mr. Somerville- purchased land that
was subsequently surveyed • into
village Ibis and sold. This set-
tlement officially came into being.
and "was named after Lucknow,
India, because of , the memorable
events associated with that city in
the quelling of the Indian Mutiny, a
barbaric uprising of nativerebels,
.whose hideous tales of massacre.
had reached even to the Canadian
wilderness.
It was in the fall of 1857 that the
Relief of Lucknow, heralded the
quelling of the mutiny and, natural-
ly enough, James Sornerville's
Scottish blood must have thrilled.
with pride that it was troops of his
homeland, although outnumbered 10
to 1, who lifted the siege and won
this tribute from their commander,
Sir Colin Campbell: "There never
was a bolder fete of arms", a fete
which won six Victoria Cross
citations for his regiment in two
days - an unheard of demonstration
of valor."
This is a very brief sketch. Those
who are interested and not familiar
with the history would find "A
Glimpse of the Past" interesting
reading.
Gloria Symes and her family,. from the left, Tom, Rob and
Theresa Ann presented a picture depicting of the Relief of
Lucknow, India, and the triumphant. meeting of Havelock,
Outram and Slr Colin Campbell In Nov. 1857, to the Village of
