County decides use of
its infrastructure funds
Bruce County has decided how it
,, wants to spend its 2.2 million in
federal -provincial infrastructure
funding.
The highways department will get
half of the total with an allocation
of $1,102,473, while $775,000 is
slated for a new county library
headquarters. A further $330,000
has teen set aside for renovations
to the county homes for the aged;
and $45,000 will be spent
upgrading, archives and record-
keeping at the county museum.
The federal and provincial
governments have earmarked
$1,501,648 for Bruce, but the coun-
ty has to add its $750,824share to
reach the $2,252,473 total.
The county's share of the funds will
come from capital reserves.
The list has to be approved by the
province, a process that could take
six to eight weeks. Finance chair
Paul Eagleson, at council's April 19
meeting, said his committee will
push for speedy approval of the
library headquarters project "so we
can put some people to work".
He said the highways committee
got "the bulk" of the infrastructure
funding to compensate for its 1.8
million in funding cuts over the
past two, years. Any money left
over from the other 'projects will be
moved to the highways budget.
The county library board is
reviewing six tenders for a new
library headquarters building in Port
Elgin.
Board chair Roy Pennington said
the tenders were chosen from a list
of 14 submissions.
The county bought the land for
the headquarters from Port Elgin
council three years ago, but delayed
construction because of capital
spending cuts.
Eagleson -said the headquarters
tenders ranged from $600,000 to
$1.3 million, and noted. the
$775,000 set aside April 19 "should
be lots: to cover the project.

On Apr. 22, they responded to a
large grass fire at Lot 19, Conc. 2,
Kinloss. Fire had destroyed part of
a rail fence and was threatening a
nearby woodlot...
On Apr. 23, . the department was
called to a grass fire in West
Wawanosh Township which had
spread onto 'another property and
was threatening a nearby home.
Chief Steer says each of these
fires and the three previous ones
this month occurred during periods
of high winds. He asks the public to
please keep this in mind. It costs
every taxpayer when the department
responds to calls such as these.

Sjaarda urged parents to build
relationships with their children and
learn ways to communicate with
them. He cautioned that if parents'
values don't get through, the values
of the world will.
Sjaarda suggested rearranging the
living room so that the TV is not
the centre of attention. Limit
viewing of television and films.
Why not offer a buy back policy to
your kids of any music purchased
which does not meet the family
standard. Christian music may be
an alternative to try.
