He said for every megawatt of energy bought from outside the co ation, Ontario Hydro would have o delete one megawatt of energy its enerating stations pro- duc "But there are cracks in .the door. We will look at NUGs being built in remote areas that have only diesel generators." He added Ontario Hydro does Intend to move ahead to develop renewable technologies. "We want to develop renewable technologies."' Labour relations between The Power Worker's Union and Ontario Hydro is an issue which Kelly felt must be addressed. "The union is against NUGs. The negotiated contract allows the union to review the current NUG agree- ments. "But that doesn't give the union veto power over NUGs. It is cer- tainly an issue ... Hydro didn't agree to stop NUG development over the next two years." He asked how many in the audi- ence would prefer wind power over nuclear power. Nearly everyone raised their hand. Kelly said farmbrs can expect no opposition from Ontario Hydro if they want to produce electricity NOWDZN I NSUUITIOtr RES. • FARM '• IND tt, URETHANE FOAM AND BLOWN -CELLULOSE "INSULATION (519), 528-2279 This Space Reserved For Your Business Card 528-2822 BELDMAN CONSTRUCTION GENERAL CONTRACTING ' ADDITIONS & RENOVATIONS FRAMING & REPLACEMENT WINDOWS PHONE 357-3042 FAX 357-4861 BOB WATTAM'S BACKHOE SERVICE •Trenching •Septic Systems •Landscaping 'Trucking w'•, :, •Float Service 'Topsoil •Storage -Trailer Rentals •Excavating • •Free Estimates •duality Work 519-357-3069 Belgrave, Ont. Windmill manufacturer Izaak Cruzen of Dutch Industries, Saskatchewan, said the size of the audience really excited him. He said he builds 80-100 kilowatt units. "I want to sell to the farmer or those who would consume all the power. My intent is not to sell to a utility. Why would you invite some- one else , to the table to produce electricity when that's your mandate in life. I have never wanted to get involved with a utility." He said it would cost about $100,000 for a complete windmill' package and an extra $30,000 to install it. The life expectancy of the unit is about 20 years. Did you know? In Ontario, 461 Canadians (159 people in Ontario) died as a result of asthma. Did you know? Asthma occurs in approximately 1.2 million Canadians or 5. per cent of the population. Did you know? "The Early Bird Gets the Worm" Advertise Now call 528-2822 Canadian Agra's windmill shows efficient operation by Bev Fry The windmill on Canadian Agra property north of Kincar- dine, has been working so well, Philip Andres, Canadian Agra vice president and project manager for the windmill feels the next step is to build a five to ten megawatt wind farm, with between 10 to 20 600 kilowatt per hour windmills. They would supply enough energy for 500 electrically heated homes. He was speaking at the wind energy seminar held at the Legion last Thursday. He told the meeting the 80 kilowatt/hour windmill, a joint venture between Canadian Agra, Natural Resources Canada CAN - MET, Ministry of the Environ- ment and Ontario Hydro, operated very well over its first winter. "I'm mot a mechanic, I'm a farmer, but the overall operating experience was very good:" 'He said •besides 'a vibration problem in November, the windmill operated well through freezing rain and the., excep- tionally cold temperatures the area experienced this winter. The blades of the Lagerway Industries turbine rotate at 60 to 120 revolutions per minute and drives a three-phase induction generator. It was installed at a cost of $161,000. From August 1993, when the windmill was first installed until the first week of April this year, it has produced 140,000 kilowatt hours. He expects it will have produced 180,000 kilowatt hours by the end of the year. Andres didn't say where the wind farm would be, but he did say it wouldn't be where" the present windmill is, close to the Kincardine airport. He is hoping a power purchase agreement could be negotiated with Ontario Hydro. But with Hydro already having to deal with excess capacity, the cor- poration is not in a position to accept a NUG, (Non -Utility Generator). "We want to get the public involved," he told the meeting. He spoke about a shared ownership structure for load displacement" He said Canadian Agra would build the wind farm and sell to investors at various levels from as low as a $2,000 investment to between $10.000 and $15,000. "It would be good for busines- ses who want to convey a green image." Andres said the wind farm could produce about 29 million kilowatt hours per year, BACKHOEING Charles C. Culbert Septic Tanks, .. Emergency Service Child care facilities coming to two Bruce schools Plans are now in progress for child care facilities at two schools in Bruce County. Last month the Bruce Board approved an agreement to rent space at Amabel-Hepworth school to Precious Moments Childcare Centre. This month trustees voted to accept a tender from the same company to operate the child care facility at the school planned for Sauble Beach. There was only one tender for the proposal, ' according to property committee member Frank Eagleson. The province has ordered all new schools to include childcare facil- ities which will be run in partner-,_ ship with the Ministry of Commun- ity and Social services, the operator and the board. In the case of the Hepworth school, Precious Moments is paying for renovation to what is now stor- age space. It will pay rent to the board and run its program separate- ly from school operations. Trustee Don Tedford, whose wife works with Precious Moments, declared a conflict of interest and left the table while' the Sauble school child care tender was being discussed. W.
