Parent meetings
A group of interested parents is
working with staff to help LCPS
becomeeven stronger. At a meeting
on Apr. 12, they discussed school
calendars, school T-shirts, the
implementation of the playground
conflict managers program, the
future of the STARpower prograrn,
parent meetings, playfighting and
Science Fair. Parental input and
feedback is always appreciated. If
you are interested in this comniittee
or would like to give input on these
topics, please contact Ms. Broad.
Problem Solvers
LCPS is excited about the next
phase of the STARpower program.
We have all worked hard to learn
' strategies to help resolve conflicts.
So far, we have focused on
negotiating, which is the skill of
, people talking through 'a problem
together. Next fall, we will begin
using mediation in cases where
negotiation hasn't worked. Four
staff members attended a training
conference to learn mediation skills
. which they now plan to teach to our
students.
As mediators, teachers and
children will act as neutral third
parties who help two parties in
conflict to solve their problem.
They will serve as facilitators, not
solving, the problem, but providing
a way for the two disputants to
resolve the problem peacefully
using their own solutions.
Mediation is. a peaceful process
which has the added bonus of
teaching critical life and com-
munication skills highlighted•in the
common curriculum. It requires
"active" listening as well as effec-
tive speaking from all parties.
In June, a select group of trained
students will practice this skill on
the playground with younger •
students, fully supported by trained
teachers.

On Apr. 13, 20 students attended
the Bruce Regional Science and
Technology Fair held in Mildmay.
It was a very exciting and infor- •
mative day for all of the par-
ticipants. Besides being judged on
their individual project, the students
had the opportunity to learn about
bats, reptiles, Ontario Hydro and
the biosphere.
As well, .they. could take part in a ..
fitness challenge, make an article of
woodworking, or, inspect their
fingerprints at the OPP Forensic
Workshop.. '

Robinson -Sugar. Bush
On Apr. 7, the Grade 3/4 students
in Mrs. Ellis' class and the Grade.
4/5 students in Miss 'Scotts' class
enjoyed a visit to Robinson's Sugar
bush in Auburn..A .special visitor
accompanying the two classes, was
Nicole Walker, an exchange student
from' Australia. Nicole had heard
about . Canada's famous • maple
syrup, and was pleased to see the
process first hand.
The two classes were divided into
groups. One joining Mrs. Robinson
on a walk into the bush. The
students saw the modern sap lines,.
crossed a wooden bridge, learned
how Indians tapped trees, as well as
pioneers, and best of all tasted
maple butter.
The other group toured the
evaporator house with Mr. Robin-
son. The osmosis._ process was
explained, and we saw a very, very
hot fire, for evaporating the sap.
Amnesty International
On Apr. 8, the Grade 7 and 8
students watched a presentation
conceming "Amnesty International."
Mrs. Cayley used newspaper ac-
counts and a video presentation to
inform the students of how people
in other countries are .. being
mistreated. They are arrested and
imprisoned for no reasons and • in
some cases even disappear. It is the
goal of Amnesty International to
write letters to encourage the rulers
of these countries to free the people
arrested and to improve conditions
within the countries.
' Critter Party
The grade one classes are en-
joying their literature unit on Mer-
cer , Mayer's CRITTER. Next
Friday, as a wind-up to the unit,
they have invited moms and dads to
a CRITTER party, to share stories,
songs and games. We also look
forward to our Wednesday visits
with the residents of Pinecrest
Manor.
