s a parent and a member of this
community, I would like to know
just how it was decided that a new
arena be the final say to the
infrastructure money coming to this
community.
As a mother of three boys and a
family involved in NHL hockey, I
have nothing against the game, but
the decision to spend that amount
of money on one building should
have more input from the com-
munity. Also, during these times
when hydro workers, teachers and
others are worried about money, is
this a feasible way to spend those
dollars?
I think that it. would make more
TO THE EDITOR
sense to look at the needs, or
interests in the community, to Pos-
sibly do more with the money than
just one improvement. Some sug-
gestions are: trees planted on
outskirts of soccer field to allow
shading; a building erected with
water and washroom facility. Cer-
tainly improvements to the arena,
along with sports a sports complex
attached that would allow sports
clubs, such as volleyball, basketball,
badminton, etc., to be started - not
only for the kids' use, but for adult
use as well. If such a facility was
available, I personally would have
an organization for at -home -moms
and preschoolers so they could
come out in the morning for two
hours, one of which could be spent
on volleyball and the other hour on
crafts and speakers, with a babysit-
ting service provided right here in
an adjoining room.
These are only a few sugges-
tions; I'm sure there are others. Be
open, let the people decide. Ask the
community what they would like
first before making a decision that
could bear a heavy financial burden
to all. Respectfully submitted,
Gary. and Kathy Leeman

Who would save
our lives?
•from page 4,
volunteer tire department, who
would rescue our lives and save our
property from destruction?
The dictionary's definition of
volunteer is : "to. act of one's own
free will". My definition of volun-
teer goes much deeper than that.
Volunteers are: "die caring touch
that make a difference.
Volunteering your time ,to your
community can be a very rewarding'
experience. Not only is it self -satis-
fying, it shows the sign of true
"community spirit." Furthermore,
how would we as a community be
able to pay for all of these services
provided to us by our local volun-
teers?

How about
changing
those vows?

housework and raising. thechildren. .
Maybe we could amend the mar-
riage vows to, "I promise to love,
honor and cherish, share in the
housework and • raising the
children." However,. that's no
guarantee. The vow as repeated
now is. sloughed off by too many
with ease.
Did you know?
In 1992, there were over 22,000
admissions to Ontario. hospitals for
the treatment of asthma; over 60
admissions each day.
Ron Andrews replies to Wolfe's 'cut the fat' letters
Dear editor:
"CUT THE FAT BUT NOT THE
MUSCLE" —,great buzz words but
has very self serving ring.
I am responding to last week's
letter to the editor by Barry Wolfe,
President of OPSTF in which he
alludes several times to the above
quote. Being in municipal politics
and therefore very cognizant of all
taxpayers justified resistance to any
tax increases, I empathize with the
dilemma facing the Bruce County
School Board. (If any one feels
they. have all the answers, let me
remind you again, elections are this
iNovember).
Shooting from the hip as you
have done, Barry, is totally ir-
responsible and seriously under-
mines the exemplary standards I
have always felt your profession
should represent. I therefore find
your argument very unpalatable and
self-serving. I feel the muscle you
speak about is your right to go on
strike holding our children for ran-
som until such time as your wish
list is filled.
It is very easy to point fingers
and condemn, but what this country
desperately needs is responsible

you Barry). The time has come to
give instead of, forever travelling
those one way self-serving avenues
which are difficult to get off of. Let
me recommend that if you truly feel
you have all the answers, take ,your
quote, "Cut the Fat and Not the
Muscle" and take the following
recommendations to your executive
board for implementation.
A. Disband all school boards and
place their current responsibilities in
the hands of the teacher's unions.
B. Provincially allocate to the
Unions the same revenue sources
available to current school boards.
You collect your shortfalls from the
local taxpayers and take the accom-
panying heat.
C. Provincially established stan-
dards must be maintained and ex-
tensive testing .standards be
implemented to ensure all
educational needs are being met.
D. Any shortfalls in maintaining the
above minimum standards be. sup-

Ride on Barry and hopefully
those rose colored glasses you view
this land of milk and.honey=through
will fall off and the cold hard facts
of the financial dilemma this great
nation of ours faces will come into
clearer focus: Don't . forget your
total financial existence is. totally
dependent upon an already grossly
overburdened taxpayer.
