Time to check out wheat fields
The wheat fields are starting to
green up, and may of you will be
trying to decide whether the stand
is strong enough to keep. Most.
fields will have suffered some
winterkill, and assessing the damage
is seldom simple.
The first thing to look at is the
number of living plants in the field.
A four-year study • of wheat yield
versus population found that
anything more than ten plants per
foot of row gave full yields, and
even six plants per foot of row
produced 90 per cent of full yield. •
A thin stand can compensate
somewhat by producing more tillers
and larger heads, but this assumes
that all the living plants are healthy
and evenly spaced. If the remaining
plants are weakened by disease, the
yield losses will be much greater. A
thin stand will also suffer from
weed .competition if herbicides are
not used to control them.
The second factor to consider iS
the pattern of winterkill. Often
FBruce County OMAF

small patches of a field are killed
out, • but the remaining stand 4s
good. 'In this case, the decision to
destroy a field is. more often based
on appearances than economics. If
damage is limited to one part of the
field, it may be worthwhile to work
up that part of the field and leave
the rest. Of course, if a third of the
field is killed out in patches scat-
tered through the whole field; it will
not be worth keeping the crop.
When you are trying to assess
'how much of the field is damaged,
it is often better to 'get a neighbor
to have a look at it. We tend to see
only the dead - patches when) we
look at our own fields, while a
neighbor can usually be more ob-
jective. ,
If your field is borderline, think
about. what the alternate crops
might be. If the field would be
planted to corn or canola if the
wheat is torn up, it is probably
worth spreading the nitrogen early.
This may give the crop the boost it
needs to get going, and if the stand
is still inadequate on May 1, the
nitrogen can still be used by the
subsequent crop.
