Must cut a little deeper
•from page 1
burdened with CPP, UIC, and EHT;
called counter productive;
- reduce government spending to
bring the debt under control.
While discussing government
cuts, Alexander said, "You are
going in the right direction. You
must take the next step and cut a
little deeper." Steckle replied,
"There is a thin line between going.
too far. We must fmd a better way
of raising those dollars."
John and Catherine Rosenlund, of
Seaforth, a retired couple, said "We
are not getting rich on old age
assistance." He ' told Steckle that
recently when he went to purchase
a new car, he changed his mind
because of the huge amount of•
taxes he would have to pay.
They are against tax on food,
referring to it as tax on a "sacred
cow".
Mr. Rosenlund suggested that
GST be based on income and
stressed he wants to be sure GST
revenues are being applied towards
the debt, not into the general ac-
count.
They expressed strong opinions
on the need for the government to
cut back on spending. "You guys
got to get your act together; if you
don't, the voters are going to do it
for you, said Mrs. Rosenlund.
Neil Rintoul, speaking on behalf
of the Huron Beef Producer's As-
sociation, conveyed to Steckle that
if changes are made to the present
GST, the tax must remain visible,
•so'that farmers can claim the rebate
and remain competitive. He would
like to see -the PST philosophy
used.
Rintoul also spoke of the high
administration costs associated with
the GST.
A written submission was made
by Doug McBurney of the Layton
McBurney Funeral Home, Win-
gham. McBurney questioned that if
the GST is replaced, what will
happen to those GST dollars al-
ready submitted on pre -paid funerals.
If you were unable to attend the
forum, Steckle will accept ideas and
suggestions until Apr. 20. You may
mail them postage free to 251 Con-
federation Building, House of Ott -
mons, Ottawa, K1A 0A6.
