Nourishing, our children's dreams
Children's dreams are filled with
images of bein all-star hockey
players and fam movie stars; of
sii►4ging in fro of millions of
people and travelling to the moon.
Althoughmost kids won't reath
such lofty goals, a parent's dream is
to see their children fulfil their
potential.
"Making sure our kids are eating
healthy foods is one of the greatest
gifts parents can give to their
children," says Tena Van't `Foort,
Public Health Nutritionist at 'the
Bruce -Grey -Owen Sound Health
Unit. "In the long term, a well-fed
child is more likely to grow up able
to realize their dreams. In the short-
term, they tend to do better in
school and take part in physical
activities they enjoy."
According to the experts, children
should be encouraged to eat a
variety of wholesome foods that
they enjoy. "Keep lots of grain
products, vegetables and fruits
around the house," says Van't
Foort. "Milk products, meat, fish,
legumes and eggs will supply the
needed calcium and iron to make
their bones grow strong and keep
their blood healthy." Children also
need a lot of water, especially when
• they are active.
While it' is important for parents
,to set a good example for their
kids, children's nutritional needs are
more flexible than most adults.
Whereas adults need• to cul back on
fat intake by choosing lower -fat
foods 'more often, young children
need adequate calories to support
growth spurts, This means that
meals can include ;more nutrient -
dense but higher fat foods like
cheese and peanut butter in meals
and snacks.
Van.'t Foort' is alarmed about the
growing trend towards child dieting.
"Although more Canadian children
suffer from being overweight than
in the past, dieting is not always the
best solution. Most kids should be
encouraged to eat healthy foods and
take part in activities and sports that
are fun."
The' old adage "breakfast is the
most important meal of the day" is
as true today -as it was for past
generations. Although, the .research
is not all in yet, most teachers will
tell you, that breakfast skippers have.
trouble concentrating and learning
in the classroom. As with many ,
things, children learn best from
example. If your mornings are
especially hectic, have your children
help set thetable the night before
and put out the non-perishable
foods. It's a great way to save some
time. If your children don't want to
eat breakfast right away, pack extra '.
food in their lunch bag for the way
to school, or at morning .recess.
Here are some quick, healthy break-
fast ideas::
. --orange wedges, toasted waffles
and a glass of milk
-a peanut better and jelly sandwich
on whole wheat bread and apple
juice
--cereal and milk topped with fresh
fruit or raisins.
