Play it safe with oversized loads.
A suggestion we have would be
that the suppliers of building goods
and pipe have proper flags readily
available for their customers. Take
some responsibility upon yourself to
ensure that when you haul long.
loads on the public roadways that it
is a . safe undertaking. This may ,
seem like a 'minor safety concern
but by . taking, a small safety
precaution you ' could prevent a
major catastrophe in your. 'com-
munity and in some, innocent per-
son's. life.
We thank you for the space in
your paper to address this concern.
If any of your readers have any
safety concerns, that they would like
the. Bruce County Farm Safety
Association to address please speak
to any of our members either at one
of.our many displays that are being
.presented or by. calling 881-3671.
Bruce County, Farm Safety Assoc'
Dear editor:
On, behalf of the Bruce County
Farm Safety Association, I would
like to thank your newspaper for all
of the support you have given to us
to promote our Safety messages to
the farm cominunity in the pasta
From time to time certain safety
concerns are brought to our atten-
tion either at one of our regular
meetings or by a concerned member
of the 'community at one of the
displays we regularly set up at.
various farm meetings and events.
The most recent Concern is one
regarding the use of proper flags
and ,lights for long anti oversized
loads while on' public roadways.
The highway traffic act clearly lays
out the criteria for hauling such
loads. It states that any object ex-
tending more than five feet beyond
the end of a trailer or tailgate must,
TO THE EDITOR
have a red flag on the end of the
load in daytime and be properly
lighted at night. Because farmers
are often in a situation where they
are hauling goods' from point A to
point B we would like to take this
opportunity to ask that they take
extra 'safety precautions while
hauling such loads as building
materials and steel pipe.
We, as thelpublic, must take more
responsibility to adhere to rules that
_are in, place for the safety of all.
Due to (imitations in resources and
manpower, . the Ministry. of
Transportation and Police Forces
cannot' always enforce these rules.
Ask for historic IPM marker
The International Plowing
Match (IPM) , hosted by Bruce
County last September is history,
and the Plowmen's Association
wants that history marked with a
monument.
IPM chair Jack Cumming
suggested a joint committee of
county council and. the
Plowmen's Association to put up
a monument marking both the
1976 and 1993 matches.
Rarely has the IPM been
hosted twice on the same proper-
ty,. Cumming said. '
"I think the other unique thing
is we've only had two lnterna-
tional Plowing Matches in Bruce
county and they've both been
highly successful. I think it's'
something that should be com-
memorated 'and recorded for
posterity," he added. '
Cumtning was at'Bruce'Coun-
ty Council March 22 to present
an aerial photo of the tented city
' last year's match.
"Bruce Beckoned and every-
one responded in "fine style,"
Cumming said, thanking county
council for supporting the 1993
match bid as far back as '1984.
Warden Milt McIver praised
Cumining's committee and 411
the volunteers for making Bruce
County a, showcase during the
match..
Thanking Cumming for the
large framed photo, McIver said
it "indicates the immense activity
that occurred on this site."
Cumming didn't' get official
response to his suggestion of an
IPM monument.
Meanwhile, council is looking
for a permanent home for the
sculpture it commissioned to
mark the IPM and the county's
125th anniversary. The life-size
model of a pioneer and horse
pulling a stump spent the winter
at the county museum in
Southampton.
