In December, Bruce County Council heard and supported the BEC's proposal for a waste treat - Ment demonstration plant that would process 120 tonnes a day of household trash into plastics, pot- ting soil and building materials. • At council's March 22 meeting, Doug Fletcher of the ' BEC told council the deal has fallen through• because of delays in negotiating energy prices for the demonstration plant. The half-dozen industries at the BEC were promised a competitive- ly -priced and reliable •supply of steam power and electricity from the nearby BNPD complex. The BEC has been negotiating those liutility prices with. Ontario Hydro for two years, but has not yet reached an agreement. Fletcher said the demonstration plant will go to Switzerland rather than wait any longer for Hydro to strike a deal. "We have not only lost the op- portunity for a plant that would have attracted visitors from around the world to our area," Fletcher said ih a letter to council. "We have also lost the opportunity, at least tempo- rarily, to Start a new family of PAUL, J. Library hours stay the same Library branches around Bruce County will continue operating on the reduced -hour schedule imposed over a year ago. Branches had their hours cut 14 per cent last year in a move to recoup a $102,000 deficit caused largely by payr equity settlements, Earlier this year the library director raised the issue of going. back to full operating hours, in accord with assurances last year, that, the cutback would be for one year only. Council, put the request on hold pending the budget. The budget approved at the March session ended any discus- sion of reinstating the library hours. Finance chair Paul Eagleson said the library recovered only $40,000 of its deficit last year, leaving the remaining $60,000 yet to 'be repaid. "Obviously the reduction in open hours of the branches in light of the current economic situation will continue in 1994 with the hopes that this tight budget will recover the deficit," Eagleson said. in his report. The library's request for $71,500in special funding to update computers, was also de- nied. Vicky Piluke, of Belgrave, is the new 'chairperson of Wheels Away (North Huron Special Transit Cor- poration). Other executive members are Rev. Cam McMillan, vice -chair-. 'person, Barbara Snowden as treasurer, and Ronda Bennett as secretary. - Gloria Workman, who has chaired the organization through two chal- lenging years of start-up for this relatively new service for North Huron, will remain on the board as past chairperson. "One of my responsibilities will be to develop, strong committees by recruiting volunteers from the community. I feel confident that the new executive will do a great job over the next year," says Workman. Wheels Away experienced a 23 per cent growth in ridership in the past year. "In some cases,, being able to get out to social events or to visit a friend can have a real eftect on people's health," says Bill Glas- sier, physiotherapist. at Wingham and District Hospital. Piluke says, "The board of Wheels Away has set ambitious goals for the coming year, which include to improve the financial picture and start a reserve for future expansion through fund-raising; to promote the system as an essential service and to increase ridership." The board meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m at the Wingham United Church, which is accessible. Any interested person would be welcome to attend.
