It always touches me the caring that comes•from people in a time of need or trouble. Recently we had a fire at our home and were very thankful for all the help we received in putting it out and cleaning up. It was brought to my attention that rumors are circulating that it was not' the fire that wrecked our house but the Lucknow and District Fire Department. I would first like to make it clear that there was very little damage done - whether it be smoke, fire or water. We were very, very fortunate 7`d THE EDITOR that it was not more severe. I feel that the Fire Department did a great job and I expect the department to do whatever it takes to make sure the fire is out. It upsets me to think that people would say we blamed the fire department for damage that never was there. It's hard to believe that this has come from a caring com- munity as ours. For 14 Will resolve conflicting, PD days A long-time complaint by parents. about conflicting professional development (PD) days for different school boards will be resolved next year, at least in Bruce and Grey counties. "We've had significantsuccess," said superintendent Bill Parent of a recent meeting involving the Bruce and Grey county boards and the separate board in an attempt to coordinate the coming school year's calendar. "Where transportation is shared, we have the exact same (PD) days," he said. It will save busing costs for the boards to set the same PD days, especially. with the increased num- ber of bus routes shared by the three boards. The new type licences will have the driver's photograph and signature electronically printed tin the surface. They are being promoted al, adding an extra level of security for the province's 6.5 million drivers. Transportation Minister Gilles Pouliot says, "This licence will reduce fraud and make our records more accurate. Since it will be compatible with our police work stations and our court network, it will also be a step forward in enforcing our laws. During the five-year phase' in period, as the licences are is- sued, the ministry will retain digitized photographs and sig- natures on file as part of the driver records. The ministry is responsible for preventing improper use of the photographs and signatures, which , are protected under Ontario's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy act. We all have feelings, firefighters included. - Secondly, 1 am very sorry that, the Fire Department had to hear this on the street. 1 can reassure all of the firefighters involved at our house fire that we were very grateful for everything they did. GARRY WOODCOCK Quality Cars & Trucks We Can Save You Money .Drive A Little - Save A Lot LUCKNOW responds to letter Dear editor. • After reading the letter to .the editor issued by McDonagh In- surance Broker Ltd., in your March 30, 1994 issue, I feel , I. must respond. I want to state that I have tried at every opportunity to have this issue resolved. The biggest problem we .have had to this point has been that the insurers are not willing to settle. I think all the parties involved with this case know exactly where the problem is. It's unfortunate that this case must go to court for that to come out. I think we all have a right to know the truth as to what happened. I want to make it clear that I have been in contact with the Minister of Finance office, the Ontario In- surance Commission and the office of the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario. As well, I have had discussion with . the members of parliament. The issue is not about the rules of confidentiality or proper etiquette, but about the difference between right and wrong in the 'eyes of the law. I want to state that is very unfor- tunate that we will not be rebuil- ding the mill. No one more than I would have liked to have seen this hapPen. This was a business that had been in Lucknow for 136 years. I feel for the town and , all the employees that have lost their jobs 'r0 THE EDITOR as a result of the fire. I want to make it known that we provided benefit coverage for all former employees until the end of February • 1994, even though we were not required by law to do so.. It has been a significant financial under-. taking to keep the business going during the last 10 months since the fire. I can state without a doubt the position we have found ourselves in, as a result of the fire, has been extremely difficult to deal with. I don't think it is possible for the insurers to fully understand this. The opportunity to settle this claim is as easy as it was the day after the fire. We have always maintained that we want to be treated fair and have this claim be handled properly. We are not the problem, only the victim, of what has become an unfortunate situation since the fire. Only when the truth comes out in court, 'will many of you understand why there was no other way for us to proceed on our claim. Mark Stever, • president and manager, Lucknow Feed Mill Inc. BARRY W.
