The Lucknow Sentinel, 1994-03-30, Page 3A legacy °of spirit and courage by Carol Phillips The Ladies Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 309, Lucknow is a, legacy of the spirit, courage and determination of the women of this community: 50 years of continuous service given freely compassionately and quietly wherever there was a need. In 1944, when the Branch was founded, Canada was at war and her needs were clear and ever present. In 1994, while Canada is not at war, the spirit of the Legion lives on in the presence and involvement in the quality of life in this com- munity and in the service to veterans. Original minute books are still •intact and tucked away for safe keeping. They are journals of an organization that chronicles the history of this village, just as it tells the stories of the women who dedicated themselves to doing what they could at a time when they . were needed. "On Monday, April 10, 1944; a meeting was held in the Legion Rooms fbr the expressed purpose of forming a Ladies Auxiliary. President Comrade Murray opened the meeting in the usual. way and then introduced the speaker for the • evening.;," • Mrs. R,J. Pegg, provincial president of the Auxiliary, spoke that evening of "the opportunities they had to serve those who are offering their lives for their country..:so that the soldiers will not be forgotten men." The first officers were Mrs. E.D. Hassall, Mrs. G. Burgess, Mrs. G. Dickinson, Mrs. R. Johnstone; Mrs. J. Campbell, Mrs. C. Cook, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Pynna, Mrs. Stinson, Mrs. T. MacDonald, Mrs. P.A. Murray, Mrs. C. McQuaig, and Mrs. Philip. Jean Hughes was the secretary at that first meeting. The minutes for June 6, 1944, began: "As our regular meeting happened to be on D -Day, the Ladies Auxiliary paraded with the Branch members of the Canadian Legion to the Presbyterian Church to the Invasion Servide which was largely attended." • Another meeting was held on June 22 and 18 new members were initiated, more than doubling the number of women who 'gathered three months earlier. At a meeting in February 1948, Kathleen Forster became president and a motion was carried that. "a gift of S1 he presented to each new baby in the Auxiliary this year." Next is our President, Sadie her name is In the daytime so dignified, and so tame is But when evening rolls round, she gets in your hair. And on election night, we gave her the chair. Mrs. Stimson is first 'vice -President, too. She's so quiet, but always knows just what to do She always is willing to do more than her share. And with Collyer on thesick committee, they have a real flare. r, Let's not forget Anne, who came form the city, She loves our wee town, and our Legion Auxiliary She is our second vice-president now, And at bowling, they tell me, she really knows how. Joan is our secretary, faithful and exacting, She won't stand for mistakes or for play acting. Now in our Auxiliary. no talent is wasted '• So back in her chair Comrade Joan rudely was pasted. We sure can't miss Eunice, wherever we see her, She wins all the prizes the shootnclub dare give her Now here is the Eunice who thinks playing banker not funny But if you insist.she will handle.your money.
