McConriells celebrate their 50th
by Pat Livingston
A young man, working on a
neighboring farm, who came to
borrow a hoe, started a relationship
that has now spanned 50 years.
That's the way Florence McCon-
nell of St. Helen's explains how her
courtship and subsequent marriage
to'Alex began. Although they grew'
up in the same area, Mrs. McCon-
nell attributes the hoe incident as
getting the ball rolling.
The McConnells were married on
Mar. 18, 1944 in Crieff, a small
community located just south of
Guelph.
Mr. McConnell looks at himself
as a 'jack of all trades'. He worked
'for 13 years at a YMCA camp in
'the area, 'responsible for main-
tenance. For 11 years, he and Mrs.
McConnell were employed by the
Presbyterian Church of Canada at a
250 acre site left to the church by
the late Colonel Maclean. He was
responsible for maintenance and
Mrs. McConnell turned her hand to
providing the meals for those
coming to the retreat.
They' moved to 'St. Helen's in
May of 1988. Mr, McConnell
wasn't prepared to give up his
beloved Belgian horses.and so they
were looking for a place with .a
little barn to house the animals.
He keeps busy with his horses,,
occasionally showing them at fairs.
Mr: McConnell has a wide arra'y of
ribbons to his credit and an interes-
ting display of bells he has col-
lected over the years. One set he
granddaughter and her husband,
Stephanie and Jeff Bloemberg of
Hartford, Connecticut, along with a
' number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her hus- .
band, Andrew on Aug. 5, 1978; five
brothers Ernest, Wesley, Jim, Char-
lie and Earl, and three ,sisters
Deneda,' Mrs. Leslie Ritchie; Ida,
Mrs. James Barbour; _and Lavina,
Mrs. Elliott Miller.
Rev, John P. Vaudry officiated at
the funeral on !Mar. 16, held at the. •
McBurney Funeral Elorne, Win-
gharn. .
Pallbearers were Frank Sherwood,
Ken 'Gaunt, Lorne Forster, Lorne
Jamieson, Russell Gaffnt and Eton
Perrot'.

wood, Ernie Sherwood and Jim
Aitchison. ,

nowledged' as expressions of sym-

estimates to be at least 100 years
old.
Mrs. McConnell is active in the
St. Helen's WI, the South Kinloss
WMS, and attends some meetings
of the Five Star Quitters Guild. Her
love of gardening is evident by the
gorgeous display of healthy, indoor
plants welcoming you to their
livingroom. In her, spare time she
enjoys knitung.
They are parents to Margaret Ann
Clark of Dunnville, Gwen. MacRob-
bie of the Guelph area,, Ken
(deceased), Donald of Millgrove,
' J
Diane Homk of London, David of
Toronto, land Sandra Nevelt of
Mount Brydges. They are • called
grandma and grandpa by nine
grandchildren.
When asked for words of wisdom
to young people embarking upon
marriage, Mr. McConnell gets a
gleam in his eye and laughs as he
says, "Always let the wife have the
last word!" Mrs. McConnell sits
back smiling, as if to say, "What
can I say?" This time the husband
had the last word.
Florence and Alex McConnell of St. Helen's celebrated their
golden wedding anniversary on Mar. 18. They were married at
Crieff, Ontario in 1944. (Pat Livingston photo)
