Bruce County gets full credit for the Machines in Motion. It was a new venture and . the cpmmittee did a great job." For the fust time in the match's 80 year history, the mayor of tented city was a woman. Nellie Johnston, owner of the host farm, bhad the distinct honor of presiding over many of the match's events. But Johnston knew what to expect. It was the second time, the first was in 1976, her farm had been used to accommodate the IPM. Prime Minister Kim Campbell took the centre stage podium where she officiated the opening ceremonies. (Another first for this match was the speaker system installed in tented city). Premier Bob Rae attended the opening luncheon and local politicians, Mayors and Reeves were part of the opening parade. 'We were quite pleased with the attendance' and the results. We showcased Bruce County and everyone contributed.. There was an excitement and a fever out there. I've got noting but good things to say about the people of Bruce," said Cumming. Hundreds of 'volunteers -and a wide variety of exhibits made for a great match, but Cumming said the weather was the icing ori the cake. "We were very happy with the weather. It played an important part for our great team." A large network of volunteers was instrumental in the 'success of the match. Service clubs, fraternal organizations and other groups from around the county put in hours of their . time. Fifty per cent of the match's profits were divided and turned back to these clubs in ap- preciation. The ..profits from the match were just short of $200,000, with private donations taking the total to $366,000. About $200,000. from the IPM committee will be used to purchase a CAT scan for the County of Bruce General Hospital in Walker- ton, pending Ministry of Health approval. "It was a unanimous decision to do that. It involves the young and the old and there has been good support from surrounding com- .nunities." Cumming hopes to see the match in Bruce County again sometime in the future. "A great community project like this exemplifies community co- operation. Everyone pitched in. Even if it was just by sprucing up their property a bit. It was great to be at my vantage point. It was a great bunch of people to work with." Cumming finished by saying the plowing match was a real tribute to the people of Bruce County. -m„ The Skyhawks skydivers dropped In on the International Plowing Match held. in Bruce County, September 1993.
