In addition to helping her husband and family raise championship Southdown sheep, she [Hakes sheep part of her life inside and outside her home. As you can guess, her "ewe"nique hobby is collecting sheep memorabilia. Keith, estimates his mother has well over 100 sheep items in the family home, near St. Helen's.. JoAnne says she believes the sheep decorations arc tastefully dome. From reframed old prints of sheep scenes from family members to the recent purchase of a sheep weather- vane, sheep or their kinfolk can be found throughout the Todd. residence. • JoAnne says she started up the hobby at a time when any sheep items were hard to find. "Therefore sheep 'anything' was neat." Her daughter Jenean, calls it her mother's "sheep shrine." One of the recent purchases JoAnne is proud of is her sheep weathervane, which she bought at the 1993 Plowing Match in Bruce County. Theonly minor setback was the weathervane had the wrong breed on it, so she had her husband repaint it to resemble a Southdown. One odd occurrence, in January, was a Southdown ewe giving birth to twin lambs - one pure white and the other pure black. JoAnne explained that ideally, • purebred Southdowns are pure white except for their hooves, The odds are 1:5,000 of getting a purebred black Southdown. They also raise .purebred Hampshires, but it is not as unusual • to get a pure black lamb.
