The turkeys are back: With the
help of the Ministry of Natural
Resources, wild turkeys which once
naturally roamed woodlands in
Huron County have made a return
to their former habitat.
A third and final drop-off of wild
turkeys, North America's largest
game bird, was made at a Stanley
Townghip site on Feb. 3, 1994.
Wildlife technician Kevin Coultes
released four turkeys: one adult
male (a tom); one adult female (or
hen); one immature male (a `Jake');
one immature female (a `Jen') into
some woodland. That brings the
total to 15 wild turkeys dropped off
'in Stanley Township by the Minis-
try of Natural Resources. Six more
birds have since been released at a
fourth Huron County site.
Four different genetic strains of
wild turkeys were released at a
Bayfield site. "We're interested in
maximizing genetic variations of•
birds," said Mike Malhiot, Area
Biologist with the Ministry of Natu-
ral Resources in Wingham. The
ministry is getting birds from other
locations in the province which are
offspring of wild turkeys from the
states of Missouri, Iowa, New
York, Vermont and New Jersey.
"It's certainly a very healthy•start
to a population...we've tapped into
all the various strains, said the Area
Biologist.

the century the large game birds.
roamed the area. During the winters
'of 1992 and 1993, a total of 33
birds were trapped in several loca-
tions in central Ontario and trans-
ferred to a pair of sites in northern.
