Students are thinIDking about science fair
by Donna Fielder
. and Mike Van Niekert
Spring is on its way at Brookside:
It's time to think about Science Fair
and Education Fair! Grade 7 and 8
students are going strong on their
projects. Most have completed
note -taking for their —background
reports, and will soon be working
on their experiments or displays.
The Science Fair will be held on
Thursday, Mar. 31, and the
Education Fair will take place on
Thursday and Friday, Apr. 28 and
29.
In unit studies; Mr. Culp's
students (Room 3) are studying
proverbs and idioms, for example
"Go Fly A Kite", in language arts.
They are also learning about
electricity and magnetism in
science.
Miss Anguish's/Mrs. Young's
room' 101 has just finished up a unit
on magnetism. They are now star-
ting a . unit on Hovercrafts. They
also have brought notes from their
parents -saying that they had healthy
breakfasts, as part of their nutrition
studies.
In Miss Wise's/Mrs. Baker's
Room 102/103, students are lean=
ning about their bodies, the major
organs, their location, and how they
work. They have traced life size
models that now have major organs
.glued on in the correct locations.
They are also writing penpal letters
to the desert.
Speaking, of letters, Mrs. Dozois'
class has been practicing letter -
writing skills as well. They have,
been learning towrite letters to
people in rpositions of authority,
such as politicians, to express their
concerns. Some wonderful letters
will soon be arriving. in Ottawa and
Queen's Park.. Not only are they
learning t correct!, letter format,
they're also learning it's important
to share your ideas.
Our school went GREEN • on
Green Day, Mar. 9. No, the "buil-
ding didn't turn green! We
celebrated completion of 100 en-
vironmental projects, which earned.
us the SEEDS program Green Ban-
ner. + We had a wonderful visiting
play, followed by presentation .of
'the banner. Thanks to the SEEDS
Committee for all their hard work
keeping track of the SEEDS
program and planning Green Day:
Shawn Ritchie, Peter Seeger, Lisa
Culbert, Leah Bauer, Patrick
Ritchie, Sarah'. Seeger, Terrianne

Young, Lee Morrison, and Jennifer
Robinson.
We were very grateful to our
Parent Advisory Committee for
donating the funds for the visiting
play. Thank you, and thank you to
Mrs. Leeman for presenting the
cheque.
We also enjoyed having Phil
Paquette from the *Lon County
Health Unit visit a brought a
tabletop model of Huron County
farm and cottage settlement which
he took to all our junior classes.
The model showed places we
should be watching to make sure
we take good care of our environ-
ment, such as farmyard runoff and
cottage waste systems.
Just for fun on Green Day we
also had contests during the day.
Students got a treat if they wore:
the most recycled clothes (hand-me-
downs), the largest number of green
items, had a litterless lunch, or
wore the largest number of
"recycle" symbols (using ONLY
recycled paper and no tape!).
Contests were also held for the best
day stories, poems, and pictures.
We had a great Green Day!
Another big thank you this week
goes to our seniors • and our
Students' Council, guided • by Mr.
Hazlitt. They held a wonderful
Snow Day on the afternoon -of Mar.
11. • The afternoon was. superbly
organized, and everyone had a
terrific time! There were 14
stations, which, included: shoot on
net, soccer baseball, sledding,
relays, hot chocolate,. snow vol-
leyball, and a tug-of-war.
Parent Advisory Council's notes'
include The Huron County Board of
Education information meeting at
.F.E. Madill in Wingharit' on Apr.
13, at 7:30 pm. This meeting is
open to the public to discuss school
board funding. The F.A.C. will be
having their next meeting on Apr.

West Wawanosh council, the
clerk -treasurer, Warden Allan Gib-
son and county .engineer 'Denis
Merrall attended the public drainage
meeting held at the Senior Citizen
Centre on Thursday. -
Rcevc Bob Hallam addressed the
meeting explaining $66,159.00 is
•available to West Wawanosh
Township through a Canada/Ontario
Infrastructure cost shared program.
As Dungannon has drainage
problems, the council wondered if
Dungannon citizens were interested
in a new drainage system, as the
present drainage system is non-
existent, is shallow, in poor con-
dition and Mutely useless. A
preliminary report done in 1989
could be used. There are two op-
tions available. .
The Drainage Act was explained
by county engineer Denis Merrall.
The vote was in favor of going
ahead with the drain. A petition will
be circulated and hopefully will be
signed by the majority of home
owners in the village..
