Genealogist learn how to use
registry office for research
A provincial director of the On-
tario ' Genealogical Society was
guest speaker at the February
meeting of the Bruce.Grey chapter.
Louise Hope spoke on the impor-
tance of using the land registry
office as an important tool for the
genealogist.
Land records are easy to access.
They are usually found, in the
district in which they were created,
and document all manner of tran-
sactions involving land, not only
changes in ownership, but also
loans using land as collateral.
The abstract index provides ready
access to land instruments. Normal-
ly, each lot of land was given a
separate page in the abstract index
book, and all the instruments per-
taining to that lot were recorded in
order of the date of registration.
The index lists each instrument by
registered number, providing the
date of registration, the date of
execution of the instrument, the
names .of the buyer and in most
cases the seller: It also gives a brief
description of the land.
Abstract indexes were not
designed to be used on their own,
but rather to direct users to land
instruments. The complete
instrument, identified by its number,
should be examined in order to
obtain details concerning the tran-
saction.
Instruments may be found in
original and/or microfilm form at
the registry offices.
In addition, instruments were
transcribed into registry books
known as copy books prepared as
backups, in case instruments were
lost.
Copy books for Bruce County are
at the museum in Southampton,
while those for Grey County are
located at the University of Guelph.
In many cases, wills which were
not probated can be found at the
registry office, as they document
the transfer of property from a
deceased person to their heirs.
The next meeting of the branch
OGS is Mar. 26 at 1:30, in the
Owen Sound Library, when the
research process will be discussed.
