Special press kit deals with rumor
•from page
they send a small sum of money to
Donahue Transcripts Journal,
Graphics, in New York City.
Donahue .. Transcripts Journal
Graphics is a legitimate offshoot or
the show, .Loizzo says, and it does
provide transcripts.
But it's been located in Denver,
lorado, since 1991.
he rumor has become so cyclical
that The Procter & Gamble Com-
pany, resigning itself to the
inevitable, has made up a special
press kit to deal with it. One of the
items in the kit was the letter from
Mery Griffin Enterprises.
Part of the rumor seems to stem -
from the company logo: a crescent
moon with a man -in -the -moon face,
looking at 13 'stars on a dark back-
ground.
According to the press kit, the
first version of the logo was used in
1851 as a symbol for Star brand
candles (Procter & Gamble began
in 1837 as a small, family -operated
soap and candle company in Cin-
cinnati, Ohio).
The earliest logo shows an al-
most -invisible crescent moon with
13 roughly -drawn stars -- and, far
from having any Satanic reference,
the number of stars commemorates
the 13 original American colonies.
The logo.was re -drawn and
refined over the next century or so.
The version now in use was
designed in 1991.
The press kit also includes clip-
pings from newspapers and
religious newsletters, as well as
'copies of letters from prominent
religious leaders, from all over the
United States. Many are apologies
'.or retractions.
'Also enclosed is a copy of a letter
signed by Phil •Donahue, which
says, in tones of exasperation, "it
seems impossible that [this rumor]
is still circulating after a decade."
The letter is dated Aug. 2, 1991.
There are also two Procter &
Gamble press releases. One, from
1990: warns that the company is
"intensifying efforts" to identify and
sue anybody who spreads this.
rumor verbally or otherwise.
The second press release, from
1992, announced that Procter &
Gamble had 'obtained a $75,000
judgement against a Kansas couple
for spreading the rumor. The press
release includes comments from the
couple. repudiating the rumor and
apologizing.
According to the two press
releases, calls and letters peaked in
1982, 1985 and 1990.
The nearly 160 -year-old Procter
& Gamble Company', based in ,
Ohio, makes a wide variety of
household products, including
processed foods, personal care
products and cleaning aids. •
Det. -Sgt. David Minzey, of the
Michigan State Police Violent
Crimes Unit, says, "I've heard
people say the theme song from
Mr. Ed is Satanic." Mr. Ed was a
television show in the early 1960s
whose central character was a
talking horse.
Minzey has been involved in
more than 1,000 investigations
involving Satanism.
"But they fall apart when you try
to pin them down about where they
got this," he adds. "And if you
challenge it: Boom! you're part of
the conspiracy."
Changes in moon and stars trademark
The oldest documented use of the Moon and.
Stars in Procter & Gamble's archives is this
crude rendering on a price list from the late
1860s.
The Moon and Stars had been refined to this
point by 1882, and registered in the U.S.
Patent office.
By the late 1890s, the trademark was still
basically the same, but displayed some of the
decorations typical of the turn -of -the century.
In 1930, . a sculptor was commissioned by
Procter & Gamble to refine the Moon and
Stars trademark.
In •1991, the Moon and Stars trademark con-
tinued to evolve, with minor refinements to
simplify its look.
