Waste management is your responsibility
Figute.s I ruin the village of
Lucknow show that in 1993, belore
any ,grants ware applied, weekly
garbage c.ollecttot) • and
truisporuttion to the Mid -Huron
Landfill Site (MHLS), in ,
liolinesville, cost $21,000. The
village's share of operating the
landfill site • was an additional
•$25,000. This in effect represents a
garbage cost of approximately $885
per week, without any set aside for
"perpetual care" of MHLS, a cost
that, is impossible to predict at this
time.
Before any grants were applied,
bi-weekly blue box recycling cost
$7,200 or approximately $140 per
week. There is no long term
liability to items diverted from
landfill through recycling; instead,
all items collected become raw
material for business and industry.
In' a letter included with the
February tax notices, the various
waste management practices are set
out. Council urges all residents to
make use of the,following
programs, to assist thein holding
garbage costs in line.

Fine White Paper
This is a fairly new program for.
the village. There is a blue bin
located at the town hall door. In it
you may place writing paper or
computer paper.
Don't worry about ink or print; if
the base color is white it can 'be
recycled. It you aren't sure, look at
the,back of the page.
Envelopes and glossy or colored,
paper are not recyclable in this
program.
Participate in policy reform
Constituents of the Huron -Bruce
riding will have the opportunity to
participate in the social security
reform process.
Paul- Skeckle, MP for the riding,
says, "We need to have a process
where people have input before
final decisions are made."
Comprehensive social security
reform is a priority for the
government. A schedule in which
this refoijn will take place has been
established and will lead to legis-
lation and implementation of a
reformed social security system.
"There is no question that the
system of social security has to be
reformed; it was designed decades
ago for a different era, Mr. Steckle
added. "The system has served the
country well, but now has to be
updated to take into account the
current social realities."
Two public forums will be held:
from 7 to 10 p.m. Mar: 17, in the
Central . Huron Secondary School
