Harry Lavis
celebrates
his 99th
Harry Lavis has lived to see a lot
happen this century.
On March 4, 1994, the Lucknow
resident will celebrate his 90th
birthday. I
A small celebration is planned at
a Wingham •restaurant -with his
family, but the birthday is
something he'd rather not make 'a
big deal of.
Born in England on March 4,
1904, Harry came to Canada with
his family in the spring of 1912: He
said he remembers that because it
was the same year the. Titanic went
down.
"We saw a Jot of icebergs, but
none hit our boat," he said.
He grew up in the St. Helen's
area and following school spent a
few years in 'Alberta and Sas-
katchewan mining coal. He returned
to this area to start farming in
South Kinloss Township. Of the 13
in the family, only he and one
brother from London are still alive.
On September 8, Harry and his
wife Mary will celebrate their 60th
wedding anniversary. In addition,
the couple will celebrate their 35th
anniversary of moving into Luck -
now.
