In a pharmaceutical -related business, customer service is an essential element for the healthy welfare of individuals. Recently, Dave Pellow, owner of Umbach Pharmacy, renovated •his main street business to provide a BUSINESS BEAT more confidential area where cus- tomers may discuss their medicinal to coach needs. Brenda K. Pawliw, the clinical retail pharmacist at Umbach's, says Betty O'Donnell (left) and Brenda Pawliw, pharmacist at Umbach Pharmacy, take'time to sit in the customer service area recently 'ncorporated into the building when it was renovated. The alcove provides an area for confidential discussions between the pharmacist and customers. (Pat Livingston photo) the new area is a place out of the .heavy traffic zone where more • privacy is provided for the customer to discuss their needs. Some things are difficult to discuss, if a person knows another may overhear the - conversation. " When the changes were made, a Counter was incorporated at the left of the prescription area for cus- tomers to drop off their preserip- tions. The pickup area is at the right, located beside a small alcove where Brenda and customers can comfortably sit and talk about their medications or over-the-counter purchases. Brenda is in the process of com- piling a video library on various drugs and diseases. She said that if a customer has to wait for the prescription to be filled, they are welcome to view videos that may pertain to their health problem. Currently, she has videos on asthma that she will lend out. The role of the' pharmacist has changed greatly over the years. Traditionally, the pharmacist's role was in making the product. Now the products come in ready made. Today, Brenda says, pharmacists arc patient -oriented rather than product -oriented. Betty O'Donnell, one of Urn- bach's customers, likes the idea of more privacy being provided for customers. "It's essential for some people," she says.
