John Vernon Hunter 1914 - 19.94 John Vernon Hunter, of Lucknow, a retired farmer, died at the Win- gham and District Hospital on Feb. 1, 1994, in his 80th year. Mr. Hunter was a faithful mem- ber of the Lucknow United Church. He was a charter member of the Lucknow and District Lions Club and a valued member of the Luck - now and District Agricultural Society. - He was born in Goodlands, Manitoba, on May 2, 1914, a son of the late John (Jack) and Florence (Bawtenimer) Hunter. Mr. Hunter is survived by his wife the . former Anna May Treleaven, of Lucknow; and children, Joanne and her husband Forbes McLellan, of Sarnia, Murray and his wife Patricia, of Wingham, Bob of Oakville, and Gregand his wife Sandra of St. Catherines. He is also survived by brothers and sisters: Lilly Culbertson of Manitoba, Ella Hackett of Luck - now, Allan Hunter, of Trenton, Ilien Lemoine of Lucknow, Bill OBITUARIES Hunter of Lucknow, Grace Wamsley of Manitoba, Frank Hunter of Alberta and Bob Hunter of Alberta; his stepmother Mary Hackett of Manitoba, and nine grandchildren. Mr. Hunter was predeceased by a granddaughter Sarah McLellan, a sister Vi Arnold, and a brother Jack Hunter. Visitation was at the MacKenzie and McCreath Funeral Home, Luck - now. The funeral was conducted from the Lucknow United Church on Feb. 4, at 2 p.m. with Rev. William Bresnahan officiating. The United Church choir was accom- panied by organist Carl Morrison. Pallbearers were Chuck Becker, Dale Lougheed, Wayne Hackett, Walter Arnold, Bradley Parker, Stewart Curran, Doug Hunter and Dale Hunter. Spring interment Greenhill Cemetery, Lucknow. Myrtle D. Rhoad 1904 Myrtle D. Rhoad, widow of the late Rev. Dr William O. Rhoad, died on Jan. 10, 1994, after a short illness. Mrs. Rhoad was born Myrtle Iva Dymond in Clark's Summit, Pen- nsylvania, on Mar. 19, 1904. In addition to Clark's Summit, Mrs. Rhoad spent her youth in Elizabeth, New Jersey and in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. area. After her marriage she moved with her husband to Kensington, Prince Edward Island. They later resided in, Ashfield Township,. Ontario; Baltimore, Maryland; McDowell, Middletown, Keyesville, and Alexandria, all in the state of - 1994 Virginia. Mrs. Rhoad spent the last few months living with her daughter, Rebecca Moore in Dale City, Vir- ginia. She is survived by two sons, William 0. . Rhoad Jr. of Gaithersburg, Maryland, and the Rev. John C. Rhoad of Edmonton, Alberta; two daughters, Priscilla Willis of Lakeridge, and Rebecca Moore of Dale City, Virginia; 15 grandchildren and three , great grandchildren. She was buried next to her late husband in the cemetery of the historic Briery Presbyterian Church, Keyesville. Harvey 'E 1907 Harvey Earl Gibson died on Jan. 13, 1994, in the Btobicoke Hospital, at the age of 87. Mr. Gibson was the, youngest son of George and Catherine (Webster) Gibson. He was born in Chilliwack, British Columbia, on Jan. 11, 1907, moving to Ontario at the. age of two. . Mr. Gibson is survived by a son, Calvin and his wife Shirley; two granddaughters, Linda 1 and her art Gibson - 1994 husband Jay Patchett, and Lori, as well as a great grandson Scottie. He was predeceased by his wife the former Margaret Brandt; two sisters, Catherine Webb of B.C. and Susan Gibson of Lucknow; seven brothers, John of Clinton, George of Lucknow, Beattie of Detroit, James of B.C., Samuel of Lucknow and Goderich, and Calvin in infancy, and Marshall of Lucknow. Interment Park Lawn Cemetery. Myrtle's home Myrtle Percy returned home from the Wingham and District Hospital where she has been a patient. We wish her improved health. Pastor and Mrs: Robert Donnan attended the funeral of a friend at Bowmanville on Monday. Sym- pathy is extended to the bereaved. WI The February meeting of the Holyrood Women's Institute was held on Thursday afternoon at the home of Edna and May Boyle. The members were welcomed and the. meeting opened with singing the Ode and repeating the Mary Stewart Collect. The rollcall was "A household hint's. Betty Smith read the November and December minutes and thanks were expressed for the remembran- ces which the shut-in received at Christmas time. This was followed from hospital KINLOuGH by May Boyle by the correspondence and the financial statement. For the program Mrs. Smith gave a reading "Seasons of the year." Grace Eckenswiller read the story of "Homemade Valentines." Betty Bushells' readings were "Coffee With My Valentine" and about a little boy in Sunday School." Edna Boyle favored with a piano number and Bessie Mautden's reading was "No Mules." Mrs. Bushell and Mrs. Maulden each conducted a contest. Following the courtesies May Boyle said Grace and refreshments were served. The March meeting will be a ;. family night beginning with a pot luck supper. Lancers meet Dundalk The first round of the playoffs started on the weekend with the Lancers meeting Dundalk for a best of five series. Lucknow took the first game in Dundalk with a 10 to 6 score and lost the second in Lucknow by a 4 to 3 count. Friday in Dundtt Dean Lindsay provided another solid performance to the Lancer net while the Priestap brothers led the offence with five goals between them. Grant Gilchrist added a five point night with two goals, while Chris Irwin picked up one as did Dan Londry. Sunday night in Lucknow the Lancers couldn't put the puck in the net when opportunity struck and then blew a 4 to 3 lead in the last two minutes to lose 5 to 4. Brad Priestap, Darren Lindsay, Chris Irwin and Brad Murray scored for the Lancers while Dean Lindsayoagain kept the Lancers in the game. Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, February 9, 1994 - Page 9 Grove ladies gather for WI meeting despite weather The ladies of the Grove gathered last Wednesday at Marilyn Reid's for the Women's Institute meeting. PURPLE GROVE In spite of the roads there was a good turnout to hear speaker Dean- na Scott talk about the Tweedsmuir books and local artifacts (things not people). Wilda Thompson as convener did an excellent job. The exchange of homemade Valentines was fun too. And talk about a gathering of the Grove folks -- wasn't that a fun evening Friday night for the card party? The excellent turnout was a great encouragement for the "10th" organizers. Winners were John Smith, Wray Thompson, John Far- rell, Katherine Collins, and Megan MacDonald. Congratulations. It was such a fun party that we decided to have another one this Friday night, Feb. 11 at the Purple Grove Com- munity Centre, 8:00 p.m. Visiting with Joyce and John Farrell and family recently were Judy and Bill Geddess, and Joy - Ellen Greenwood. Congratulations to John Paul Greenwood on the successful completion of Grade 13 from Walkerton High School. We are proud of you. Grandma Gladys Arnold enjoyed a visit with Marion and Ken 'McEwan of the Ridgetown area. They were telling her all about their working visit to the New Zealand recently. Marion and Ken also visited with his aunt and uncle Anne and Don McCosh. Happy Birthday greetings are sent to Irene Boyle and Ruth Stanford. Belated greetings are sent to Wilma Sutton. Sure was nice to see Cecil Sutton back in the shop after his surgery. Kay Collins enjoyed a visit with Janet Nixon in the past week. Get well wishes are sent to those in tbe hospital - Edna Fowler, An- nie Scott - to name two. We do wish you a speedy recovery. Maureen and Roy Collins were glad to have a visit with Jennifer who is attending Guelph University and David who is attending OAC. Linda and Wray Thompson spent the weekend with his parents Wilda and Harvey Thompson. Krysten Walker spent the weekend with her mother in Thornhill. Congratulations to all the high school students on the completion of their many delayed exams. Now it's back to the books again. Some planning was done to have a dinner at the Grove on Saturday, Feb. 19. We look forward to seeing you there. Pee Wee A's down Paisley three straight The Paisley Pee Wees visited Lucknow on Feb. 1 for the third game of this playoff series, with Lucknow taking this round three games straight. The opening period saw Jonathon MacKinnon scoring the first goal assisted by Ian Moffat. Mark Stan- ley got the second goal for Luck - now, with help from Rob McGee. " In the second period, Paisley scored their one and only goal of the game. Lucknow tallied five more. Goals were by Craig Moffat, J. MacKin- non (2), Dennis Lubbers, and Ian Moffat unassisted. Assists were tallied by: J. MacKinnon, Lubbers, I. Moffat (2), C. Moffat (2), S. Petteplace, and Greg Courtney. During period three, Craig Moffat scored two goals assisted by Cam Moffat and D. Lubbers. J. MacKin- non scored the ninth goal, with help from L Moffat. . Great goaltending ' by Jordan Andrew and Adam Cameron.
