GODERICH - The Jan: 31
deadline for closing the emer-
gency department at the
Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital has been pushed back at
least two or three weeks.
At the Jan. 24 meeting of the
board of governors, board chair-
man Joe Porter said the medical
staff has agreed to extend the
deadline by "two or three
weeks" until information is
received from Med Emerg Inc.,
a Toronto area firm that
contracts to cover emergency
wards.

Separate school board's
aim is to be debt -free
The Bruce -Grey Separate School
Board says the prospect of being
debt -free by 1996 is the main
reason it is able. to flat -line . all
expenses except wages and benefits
at 1991 levels.
Business superintendent Paul
Serre said at the Board's Jan. 25
meeting, as long as. the board sticks
to its no -debenture policy, it will be
able to continue. the trend.
"After '96 we'll be -out of debt,"
Serre said. "That has been part of
our flexibility in the last couple of
years and in the next few years; to
be able, to live with flat -lining 'all
over the place. We don't have
increasing debt payments. In many
cases, the majority of boards are in
that position where they're looking
at debenturing on a long-term..basis
for their projects. And they have to
meet those commitments because
that's the Local share they're
looking at."
Trustees reviewed bud'getworking
papers for administration and •
operations departments that show
expenditures lower in some cases
than 1993 levels.
A major concern for Serre is that
the board has no control over the
impact of costs for mandatory
employee benefits. He cited pension
and unemployment premiums and
employee health tax as some of the
mandatory benefits that were
unilaterally increased by senior
levels of government at the board's
expense. .
Last fall, the separate board
changed to a Worker's Compen-
sation self-insurance plan. Serre
hopes savings from that move wilt
•'help hold the line on the cost of
benefits.
