Suggests $ go
back into
capital budget
•from page 1
for a capital expense, we have to go
back to the municipality? You
could be sitting fairly tight,
especially if you have a major
equipment breakdown;" Carter
suggested the board put the money
in the landfill's capital budget. '
There was a motion made to
receive and file the letter which
suggested the money go back to the
municipalities. It.was passed in a 4-
3 vote.
The board next meets on February
10 at 4 p.m. in the Goderich
Township Municipal' Building.

Motorists were cautious
drivers during December
- by Tracey Doerr
Knowing police officers would, be,
out in full -force during the festive
season it seems many were extra
cautious when it came to driving.
Andy Burgess, Acting District Six
Community Service Officer, said
most people are prepared for RIDE
programs during the holiday season.
Contrary to what most people
would believe, . December is one
month out of the year where ac-
cidents involving alcohol usually
decrease.
District six (Bruce, Grey, Huron,
Perth and Wellington Counties)
OPP officers investigated 6,889
accidents in ,1993, 473 of those
involved alcohol, a percentage of
6.8.
But in December, where there
was a total of 801 accidents, the
percentage decreased by 2.9.
Burgess said accidents involving
alcohol have dropped slightly from
1992 and that for all of last year the
"picture was good overall.” .
Although there were 55 more
deaths in 1993, alcohol was not
listed. as one of the four major
causes of fatal accidents. But it was
a factor in 28 per cent of fatal
accidents.
One hundred and fifteen people
died in accidents last year mainly
because of speeding, driving too
fast for weather conditions,
disobeying stop signs or failing to
yield to oncoming traffic.
About 18 per cent of those killed
were ejected from their vehicles
because they were not wearing
seatbelts.
The highest percentage of people
killed in a certain age group was 34
' per .cent in the ages of 1.6-25.
From Nov. 28, 1993 to Jan. 1,
1994, 48,778 vehicles were stopped
for RIDE programs.
Eighty-six, 12 -hour suspensions
were issued, 29 charges for ability
impaired, over .80 mg or refusing a.
breath sample were given and 186
other criminal, traffic or liquor
charges were laid.
Burgess said people arc wising up
about the consequences, of drinking
and driving and becoming more
socially responsible.
