consider signing regarding Madelyn
Murray O'Hare, an atheist, whose
efforts successfully eliminated the
use of Bible readings and prayer
from all schools in the United
States, which was followed soon in
Canadian schools. She is now trying
to eliminate worship services on -
radio and T.V. as well as all
Christmas programs and Christmas
carols in the schools.
There seems to be general support
for Petition #2943 to counteract the
attempts of this woman. Letters
may be sent to Murray Elston, or to
Washington, D.C. Over a million
signed letters are needed to defeat
Madelyn O'Hare by showing that
there are still many Christians in
America and Canada.
The remainder of the program
was pot luck which included several
New Year's readings.
Deanna Reavie gave the announ-
cements.3..We are asked to continue
to save Campbell Soup labels,
Knechtel tapes, stamps and tabs
from pop cans.
Mrs. Reavie gave a brief introduc-
tion of the Mission Study into the
21st century. Mrs. Hackett gave a
reading from the Study.
The two units divided for the
business portion of the meeting and
made plans for 1994.

with a New Year's greeting, read
the scripture and gave the offertory
prayer.
The treasurer's report was given
by Mildred Cameron. Kathleen
Collyer read an article on citizen-
ship and Velma Morningstar
reported for supply, Bernadean
Ritchie for community friendship
and Laura Lee Cayley for christian
education.
The rollcall was answered with
the payment of fees.
Mary Boyle conducted the Fel-
lowship of the Least Coin on the
countries of Bosnia, Croatia and
Serbia, with prayer for Ellen Pye
and her efforts cowards peace.
Each member took part in a most
interesting pot luck program,
including both serious and
humorous poems and readings.
A discussion was conducted on
the present Mission Study, a true or
false paper on arthritis and a poem
on the old model T Ford. A school
play of the nativity was read and
New Year's prayers offered.

LIFESTYLE
TIPS
How Fit Are Canadian Children?
CF(RI: The Researchers hi Active Living
How fit or active are your own
children? Like mann parents, you
may say "ver)y," .ifiven all the
running around you constantly see
about you! Or you may be
concerned by all that TV watching
going on. • • • .
Let's get some facts from the
1981 Canada Fitness Survey and
the 1988 Campbell Survey to see.
where our children. really stand• (or
don't stand!). Here's what the
Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle
Research Institute. found when it
conducted those surveys: .
The fitness story: Fitness is a
combination of.strength, muscular
endurance, cardiorespiratory
endurance, flexibility and body
composition. Whereas boys score
higher on strength, girls score
higher on• flexibility. Boys' and
girls' strength and enduran.e have
decreased since 1981, as did boys'
flexibility, Cardiorespiratory••fitness
increased slightly. for girls and
decreased slightly for‘boys, elimi-
nating previous gender differences
in cardiorespiratory fitness levels.
' The activity story. The good
news is that children now spend
more Aim and energy on physical
activity. The had news is' that they
now engage in less vigorous activi•
tics: they' choose activities Of low
intensity while letting go• of
modrrate-intensity ones. Yet,
compared with. other ,age groups.
young Canadians are the most
physically active. Bul are. they
active enough?
Both '• fitness and activity
promote good health. However,
fitness is -partly due to genes and
other environmental factors like
antvunt and type of food. We
therefore don't• have as much
control over it. We do over our
•activity.levels.. however. Evidence
shows that for adults, it is physical
activity that is most 'important to
lowering the risk of disease. In fact,
physical•activity may bring about
health~benefits-such as a reduction
in osteoporosis and dep•r.ession,•
which fitness won't bring.
If physical activity is so impor
tant to the health of adults,
shouldn't we make sure that kids
pick up the habit at a young age?
The best place to reach all children,
regardlless of skill or background. is
the school. Quality daily physical
education classes can help kids to
participate in physical activity and
appreciate it. To make it a Lifelong
habit, children should also be,
active in a vaq'tety of settings—
during.school, during chores and at
p19Y•
Parents have a large part to play
in making •sure that children -get
enough activity.. As'parents (or
aunts ortuncles). you.can
• • help your children to discover
activities they will find so enjoy-
able that they will want to go
hack to them again and again:
•• entice them to 'I'M play outside"
ra's;uluriv after class and on week-
ends;
•
•' expose tllcim to physical activities
they can use throughout their
• lives, especially those,'resembling,
adult activities, like swimming
and•ricycling.. . •
Must inipo.rtant, get into that
snowshoeing bliti or that crazy
game of Frisbee yourself! Your
kids will love. it even more! Your
own attitude- toward physical
,activity is key to encouraging or
discouraging them from being
_active. especially the younger ones.
