Chris Palmer, our HCFA pro-
gram chairman, introduced the
Honourable Eugene Whelan, "the
great Canadian farmer." Whelan's
talk included many items of
general interest to agriculture,
both past and present. Bob Har-
rison thanked our guest. Whelan
has written a book about his per-
sonal experiences in agriculture,
which was released at the end of
September.
Three resolutions were presented
for approval by the meeting; all
were accepted and passed and will
be forwarded to the OFA conven-
tion.
1. WHEREAS farming has
become a part-time enterprise for
many farmers today,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLV-
ED that the OFA consider holding
its convention on a weekend to
allow part-time farmers to par-
ticipate. Carried.
2. WHEREAS the consumer is
uninformed as to the small portion
of his food dollar which actually
reaches the producer, and
WHEREAS the farmer is con-
stantly called upon to explain how
small a percentage of retail price
increases actually reaches the pro-
ducer,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLV-
ED that the OFA take the ap-
propriate course of action to have
the farm value of the food contents
printed on the food package to in-
form the consumer of the relatively
small portion of the food dollar
which is received by the producer.
Carried.
3. WHEREAS farming incomes
are in a precarious state, especially
cash cropping, and
WHEREAS we have very little
say about the price we receive for
our products and equally as much
say regarding the price we pay for
our inputs (we don't like the way
some companies gouge the farm
sector — a case in point: canola
seed at $7,200 per tonne when the
farmer receives $185 per tonne.
Another example is the product
Roundup: it is twice our price in
Europe because they are subsidized
and will pay it and in Australia the
price is half ours because those
farmers simply refuse to pay it),
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLV-
ED that OFA lobby the govern-
ment to set up an agency or watch-
dog group to make these com-
panies charging exorbitant prices
justify their pricing. Carried.
