Using these appliances wise- ly will cut down on energy con- sumption. Your hot water heater is a good place to start. If it's natural gas, set the thermostat no higher than 140°F (60°C). If you don't have a dishwasher, you could even set the thermostat lower, at 120°F (50°C). lower temperature is safer too, particularly if there are children or elderly people in the house. Insulation around the hot water pipes and the tank itself will reduce heat loss. Make sure controls, junction boxes, air inlets, and tank tops are not affected by the extra insulation. And introduce yourself to the joys of a refreshing shower — usually, it will use half as much hot water as a bath. A flow restricter in the shower head will further con- trol your hot water use. Don't ignore that leaky faucet. One drop a second turns into a tor- rent of 175 gallons a month. Cooking wisely also means using less energy. The key to energy-efficient cooking is planning ahead. Frozen foods should be thawed before be- ing cooked. Use as little water as possible when you cook. The food will cook faster and be more nutritious. By cooking several dishes together when the oven is on, using a pan the same size as the element, and switching from metal to glass baking dishes, you can make your stove more efficient. Much oven preheating can be avoided with foods that need more than an hour of cooking, except, of course, cakes and pastries. Be aware that an electric kettle is more efficient than a stove -top ket- tle. Pressure cookers or small specialized appliances such as toasters, popcorn poppers, and %raffle irons use less energy than the oven. 1 -ridges should be defrosted regularly and should not be
