ADVICE
have traditionally played, they
have found themselves coping with
situations that they may have
thought beyond their control.
These experiences can be used
positively when the team is faced
with disastrous commodity prices
and land deflation.
Husband and wife should also
plan jointly for insurance.
Coverage on both is often ad-
visable.0

DOOR SAFETY
A report on the safety of
automatic sidewall doors, written
by a swine specialist with the On-
tario Ministry of Agriculture and
Food and two agricultural
engineers, is now available.
in the past few years some farms
have switched to natural ventila-
tion in livestock barns, partly
because automatically operated
sidewall ventilation doors are now
available. In comparison to other
mechanized equipment on farms
these doors are not particularly
hazardous, but they can be
dangerous. A year ago a child's life
was lost in an accident involving
one of these doors.
If you have automatic sidewall
natural ventilation doors on your
farm or are interested in the
report, you can obtain a copy from
your local agricultural engineer or
agricultural representative.
The report describes the various
door -closing mechanisms and
makes several recommendations to
help farmers correct safety
hazards. Most systems can be
made safe by using a slow speed of
operation and a low closing force.
A mechanism that moves the door
in short steps with a time delay be-
tween steps is a benefit. (Most
types of equipment now being sold
use these safety features.) The
report also includes a plan for a
break -away door fastener which
can be fitted to existing automatic
sidewall doors so that they will
release if obstructed.'. -
