PRESERVING
WETLANDS
As Ontario loses more wetland
areas each year, it loses a vital
resource, and a wetlands con-
ference October 4 will address the
issues surrounding wetlands
preservation.
Wetlands absorb flood waters,
prevent erosion, filter and
replenish ground water, provide
wildlife habitats, and offer recrea-
tional opportunities. But 85 per
cent of Ontario's original wetland
areas are now farm land, har-
bours, waste disposal sites, and
roadways, and existing wetlands of
provincial significance are
threatened by development.
The conference, open to the
public and sponsored by the
Mcllwraith Field Naturalists of
London, will bring together
farmers, hunters, naturalists, con-
servation authorities, and provin-
cial and federal government agen-
cies. It begins at 9:00 a.m. in the
Central Library auditorium, 305
Queens Avenue, London.
During the afternoon session (2
p.m.), Jack Wilkinson, second
vice-president of the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture, will
discuss The Role of Agriculture
and Wetlands Preservation.
The conference will also feature
speakers from Ducks Unlimited,
the Federation of Ontario
Naturalists, the Upper Thames
River Conservation Authority, the
Ontario Ministry of Natural
Resources, and the Canadian
Wildlife Service. For further infor-
mation, contact Dr. William A.
Rapley, President, Mcllwraith
Field Naturalists of London,
519-472-0223 (res.), 519-661-2111,
ext. 6768 (bus.). Advanced reser-
vations are required but there is no
registration fee. ❑
