2 THE RURAL VOICE
EDITOR'S DESK
Everybody talks about the
weather, but can someone do
something about it? Summer of-
ficially ended August 27, says
Mery Erb, who writes this month
about problems in the corn fields.
Since the end of August, cer-
tainly, few days have seen the
sun, which is a way of leading in-
to another of our stories this
month: the crop insurance pro-
gram and proposals for its refor-
mation. Alice Gibb spoke to
farmers and crop insurance of-
ficials and in this issue reports on
their concerns and opinions. Our
Minister of Agriculture is review-
ing the program, and changes
may be announced shortly.
Out of the ashes comes change
and growth. The Diemerts, who
farm near Ayton, had their barn
destroyed by fire five years ago.
Today the Deimerts have not only
restored their enterprise, but have
mastered some lessons on how to
cut corners on just the right
angle.
Keith Roulston, in his column,
wants to know where all the
angry farmers have gone. Gisele
Ireland reports that it's too quiet
on the farm since her children
returned to school, and Adrian
Vos says that the small egg pro-
ducer is getting the short end of
the stick.
Agri -Food Week begins on Oc-
tober 6 and is designed to pro-
mote awareness of agriculture
and related industries — if we
don't get rained out.
